General
The Arturia BeatStep is a compact USB pad controller with 16 velocity and pressure-sensitive pads and 16 rotary encoders. A number of (transport) buttons and a large data dial complete the panel. The BeatStep is the perfect companion for software such as Ableton, BFD and Toontrack EZdrummer, as well as other drum and percussion plug-ins. Thanks to its comfortable, well-organised layout the controller is pleasant to use, and the backlit pads ensure great visibility when you’re on a dark stage.
Possibilities of the Arturia BeatStep
Set the BeatStep to CNTRL (controller) mode if you want to produce multiple drum sounds at the same time. In CNTRL mode, it functions as a typical MIDI controller, just like a MIDI keyboard. Set to SEQ (sequencer) mode, the Arturia pad controller functions as a step sequencer. The rotary encoders allow you to change the pitch of a step, and the BeatStep is able to store up to 16 sequencer patterns. It’s also possible to use the pads of the BeatStep as MIDI CC buttons, notes, or program and bank changes. The transport buttons of the controller can also serve as MMC controllers or MIDI CC to start and stop a DAW.
CV/Gate
In addition to the usual USB MIDI communication, the Arturia BeatStep supports CV/gate out, which is quite remarkable. CV/gate allows you to control classic, vintage synthesizers - in the 1960s and 1970s it was the preferred way of communication. After the introduction of the MIDI protocol, CV/gate was largely discarded, but with the increasing popularity of vintage synths, CV/gate is once again in demand.

A firmware update could do it but that hasn't happened in a long time, other than that gripe it's great for what it does.

Snel geleverd, arturia beatstep werkt prima.
Echter onterecht een mail notificatie van Bax gehad dat de betaling mislukt was en hierdoor dubbel betaald.
Wel snelle reactie helpdesk op mijn melding.
Geld zou binnen 7 dagen teruggestort worden. Nu 5 dagen verder nog niets ontvangen maar vertrouw op goede service van Bax dat het geregeld wordt. Zodoende 4 sterren, net geen 5.

Plug and play, aangekocht voor projection mapping (madmapper) live besturen van visuals, voelt heerlijk aan en compact! Top aankoop! Of ik genoeg pads om handen heb, tuurlijk, te veel zou te onduidelijk worden, via de software kan ik tijdens het live gebeuren de pads herprogrammeren. Indien je nog twijfelt, niet doen!

Handig ding zeg! Ik zocht een hele simpele recht toe recht aan stand-alone - dus zonder computer of DAW - sequencer voor simpele bass lines en voor sound-scapes, en met de mogelijkehid andere apparaten te clocken. De BeatStep Pro zou voor mij overkill zijn, maar heeft wel wat meer MIDI mogelijkheden.
Met de M-Audio MIDISport 4x4 (dank u wel Bax) kan ik met deze machine meerdere sequencers aansturen om alles netjes in sync te houden.
De manier van sequence maken doet me iewat denken aan analoge sequencers, heerlijk old school.
Ik gebruik haar (hem?) nu om een Waldorf Pulse 2 te sequencen en via die M-Audio MIDISport 4x4 drie Arturia KeySteps mee te syncen. Sja, ieder zijn/haar eigen manier van jammen.
Minus: Alleen maar een MIDI OUT en geen MIDI IN. En de MIDI OUT signal voltage is net te zwak om een Y-splitter te gebruiken voor twee machines. Vandaar dat ik dan maar die M-Audio MIDISport 4x4 heb gekocht.
Plus: Al het bovenstaande, inclusief mooie vorgeving, solid build, en de usual septagon knoppen ;-)
