You walk through the city, past fences, pipes and buildings full of cables, and you don’t hear a thing. The SOMA Ether V2 makes that invisible landscape audible. The device picks up electromagnetic radio noise ranging from hertz to gigahertz, and converts it into sound. What sets the Ether apart from a standard radio receiver is that it has no tuning circuit to filter out everything except a single narrow frequency band. This allows you to hear the unfiltered electromagnetic radiation that people unconsciously create around them, from busy streets to woods and the coast.

Everything is an antenna!

As well as the built-in magnetic antenna (similar to old long-wave radios) and the digital antennas, the Ether V2 also has two external antenna pins. With these pins, you can turn any conductive object into an antenna! Touch a metal banister, pipe or doorframe with your fingers or a piece of wire and you’ll get a completely different sound. The two pins each respond differently to the signal, so switching between them or combining them produces new sounds. On the side, you’ll find two control knobs: the top dial controls high-frequency gain and regeneration, allowing you to ‘zoom in’, as it were, on the most interesting part of the signal. The lower dial controls the volume.
