General
Speakers are probably not the first thing you think of when you hear the name Denon, but the manufacturer does offer a selection of them. This particular model, the compact Axis 8, is an 8-inch speaker with a remarkable coaxial construction. The high-frequency driver has been mounted on the woofer, eliminating phase issues - both the tweeter's and the woofer's sound reaches your ears at the same time. Another benefit of an coaxial speaker setup is a compact speaker cabinet. For the Axis 8, Denon was able to reduce the size by about 30%, resulting in a considerably lower weight.
Denon DJ Axis 8: an active speaker
A 2,000-watt class-D amplifier drives the 8-inch woofer and 1.75-inch driver of the Axis 8. Thanks to that choice of amp, the overall weight of the speaker has been kept to a minimum, without sacrificing any of its power - the Axis 8 is able to deliver a tight, punchy bass. The active speaker isn't difficult to position. Its coaxial speaker setup allows you to use it both horizontally and vertically. Simply flip it on its side if space is limited.
DSP
These days, most modern active speakers are equipped with DSP - Digital Signal Processing. The Axis 8 is no exception, and its DSP protects both the speaker and the amplifier. Loud peaks are automatically limited, so your speaker won't get damaged by overly loud signals. A 5-band equalizer, meanwhile, allows you to adjust the sound of the speaker to your own personal preferences.
