General
Unlike most ribbon microphones which have a figure-of-8 polar pattern, the slimline Beyerdynamic M 160 ribbon microphone features a hypcardioid polar pattern, so it can form part of a kit for live engineers as well as studio engineers. In fact, this mic is an on-stage classic. The compact design certainly helps where, instead of one large ribbon, the M 160 has been fitted with two very small ribbons, so small in fact, that they're able to fit inside the spherical microphone grille. The M 160 is already renowned for its warm response and silky trebles and has long been in the top three among sound engineers when it comes to miking up drums and guitar amplifiers.
