General

The Charvel Pro-Mod San Dimas Bass JJ V CM five-string J-style bass sets up the more discerning bassist with solid, stable sound backed up by an active preamp and detailed tone controls. Three-band equalisation brings shape to the output of the two mounted DiMarzio Area J pickups, where you get a DP551 at the bridge and a DP550 at the neck that blend together for a heady, sustain-rich sound framed by deep-diving fullness and tight definition, even when it comes to the extra-low range of the B-string. To accommodate the extra string, the super-stable caramelised maple neck has been given a longer-than-average 35-inch scale length, while the satin-gloss coating of the back of the neck gives this model its fast and smooth feel, and the compound fretboard radius maintains a snug grip in the lower registers and a fluid, flexible playability higher up the neck.

What a surprise quality bass! Feels great to play with a surprisingly thin (usable - not too small) neck that feels a cross between a j-type neck and a more modern shallow neck profile. The workmanship and hardware are reliable and totally gigable. The tones sound great to me and I prefer to process my bass in passive mode using compression, amp modelling and, if necessary some EQ. It feels great to play and very solid and we'll made - no sharp frets or slipping tuners. The finish is actually metallic - although this doesn't show in most of the photos online. My bass is 4.2kg and is very well balanced which somehow makes it feel lighter (not sure how that works?). If you've seen owner reviews and videos, you'll know about the noise issues when engaging the active circuitry and also how to fix it yourself inexpensively (search for online videos on this topic to find out more). I would gig this bass in passive without hesitation and probably address the shielding at a later stage for studio work.
