General

This bass guitar may not stand out against Orange's characteristically orange amplifiers, but that doesn't make it any less funky. The O Bass was shown in a number of videos by Orange back in 2014, which inspired an increasing demand for it to be manufactured. Finally, technical director Adrian Emsley saw the light and decided to take the O Bass into production in 2016. Its body may have a familiar look about it, but its headstock, pickguard and pickup are all unique and covered in a retro sauce.

Versatile sound

Visually, the Orange O Bass is sure to get you noticed, but its sound is nothing to scoff at either thanks to its Custom Wound Split-Coil Humbucker. It features a specially-designed split-coil pickup that's mounted 8 mm closer to the neck than most basses so it can capture more harmonic tones. It's also what gives the O Bass its 'growl', according to Emsley himself. This bass is ideal for rock, but it's just as suitable for a groovy funk or soulful set as well.

Tropical lightweight

Orange selected okoume, a lightweight West-African wood type, for the body of this bass, and covered it with a basswood veneer top. On top of that, they mounted the pickguard, which comes in both white and black. Adrian Emsley said jokingly that the shape of the pickguard reminded him of a Formula 1 racing circuit, or a seahorse, depending on how you look at it. The bolted-on medium vintage U-shape maple neck with comfortable rosewood fretboard has 19 medium jumbo frets. Combined with the white headstock and open-gear machine heads, it all adds up to one awesome-looming bass guitar. Store and transport it in the included Orange gig bag.

NAMM 2016: Orange - Mad About the O

Thursday 21 January 2016 By Lizanne

When Orange created their first bass guitar, people probably gasped and said "Oh" in utter amazement, which could very well be why they named it the O Bass. This vintage-style model is available in three colours and features modern pickups known as split humbuckers. We can see the British brand is being held in high respect judging by their stylish O Edition headphones.
