The American band OK Go and Korg have just unveiled the result of their fruitful relationship: the Korg Volca Sample OK Go Signature Edition sequencer. Just like the original Volca Sampler, this ingenious, portable toy is designed for the creative sample-tweakers among us. Its stylish control panel is the first thing that's different about this particular device. Another big difference is the fact that it's teeming with samples from OK Go's latest album "Hungry Ghosts"! Additionally, it's extremely exclusive. Only 3,000 of these were made, so if you want one, you'll have to act fast, because it's now or never!
Synthesis and sequencer of the Korg Volca Sample OK Go Edition
It is possible to overwrite the built-in samples (and to retrieve them again using the factory reset), but you can also make your own material with the Volca Sample. Add new samples via the iOS device you use for recording, such as an iPad or iPhone. See the tips and comments below for more information about how to get samples into the Volca Sample via third-party software. There is a modest collection of synthesis parameters to edit and adjust the samples to your liking. With the step sequencer, you can adjust 11 parameters for a wide variety of audio possibilities.
Additional options
Play the Volca Sample with the multi-touch keyboard, with a maximum polyphony of eight. A reverb is available per part for a more spacious sound. There's an analogue isolator, which is basically an equalizer that controls the bass and trebles, leaving the mids as they are. Of course you'll want to use the Volca Sample in combination with your other Volca models. To that end, Korg has fitted the device with sync connectors. The sample sequencer can be powered by batteries (6 AA batteries are included), which means you can unleash your musical creativity wherever you go.

Certes sont usage est très spécifique, comme c'est le cas pour tous les autres Volca, mais il fait bien le boulot, en prenant un minimum de place.
Je l'utilise principalement pour faire des loops rythmiques, ou pour faire passer son son au travers des filtres de ma Mono Station, et pour le prix, difficile de lui reprocher quoi que ce soit.
Il manque peut-être un port USB pour les mises à jour, ou les transferts de fichiers/sample, mais devoir le faire par l'entrée syn in est assez marrant et rétro. (Pensez juste bien à ne pas lire les fichiers de mise à jour, qui sont finalement des fichiers sons, sur votre matériel, sans le brancher dans le Volca à l'avance, les bits de données font mal aux enceintes :D)
A noter que le fait que ce soit la version OK GO est plutôt sympa, et vous n'êtes absolument pas obligé de garder le pack de son chargé sur le Sample. Le pack "de base" est téléchargeable sur le site de Korg, tout comme le pack OK GO et il existe bien d'autres packs disponibles sur le net.

Gelukkig kan je er zonder een enkel probleem je eigen samples in zetten.
TIP: Om geheugen ruimte te besparen, kun je de samples natuurlijk 3 octaven hoger in het geheugen zetten (worden ze navenant sneller afgespeeld) Als je ze dan weer 3 octaven vertraagd, is het geluid nog steeds goed, en kan je zonder problemen samples van 15 of meer seconden er in zetten.
Verder zit er een panfuctie op, dus je kan er echt te gekke stereo effecten mee maken.

- Andere samples erop zetten kan alleen via een app.
- Het aantal samples is beperkt tot 100.

Gebruik de Volca Sample samen met een Volca Keys, Volca Bass en een Roland TR-8 en de Sample heeft mijn setup echt compleet gemaakt. De standaard samples van de OK Go editie vond ik wat minder maar deze kan je direct vervangen met de samples van de originele Volca Sample. Het gebruik van samples maakt producen een pak interessanter, zeker voor vocals vind ik zelf.
Pluspunten
+ Prijs is zeer gunstig
+ Veel kracht in klein pakketje
+ Veel opties om de samples aan te passen (snelheid, pitch, hi cut,...)
+ Analoge isolator voor treble en bass op de Volca zelf
Minpunten
- Jammer dat er maar 4MB plaats is voor samples (al is dit met de andere volca's niet zo een probleem omdat ze elkaar goed aanvullen)
- Knoppen van de analoge isolator voelen niet zo stevig (veel speling)
- Manier om samples op de Volca te plaatsen is wat geknoei had liever een simpele usb aansluiting gezien
Alom vind ik dit een super toevoeging aan mijn setup! Het OK Go design is ook best cool en het bakje is echt super krachtig voor zo klein te zijn.
