The MR5mk3 is part of the third revision of Mackie's compact studio monitor series. Despite being the smallest model from the series, it certainly delivers the goods - thanks to carefully selected components that match each other perfectly, this monitor produces a sound that'll blow you away. If you're still working with modest computer speakers or OEM monitors of a questionable quality, the MR5mk3 is an excellent upgrade.
MR5mk3: components
A balanced sound can only be achieved by meticulously chosen components in a well-designed housing. Fortunately, the Mackie MR5mk3 checks all those boxes. Its 5.25-inch polypropylene woofer has been securely mounted in a sturdy, all-wood cabinet, ensuring that bass tones and mids are reproduced without any distortion. The tweeter is surrounded by a redesigned waveguide that enhances dispersion and widens the sweet spot.
Amplification
The MR5mk3 is particularly suitable as a nearfield monitor, but that doesn't mean its sound is fragile or its volume unimpressive. In fact, the compact monitor features a built-in class-AB amplifier module with an RMS power of 50 watts. As every (studio) space has its own acoustics, it's important to determine the MR5mk3's optimal settings before using it as a reference monitor. Simply use the HF and LF controls to set the right high and low-frequency levels, and the Mackie monitor will sound just as it should.

Bij aanschaf is het wel handig om de Devine Mon Pad monitorisolatie mee te bestellen, want deze jongens klinken fantastisch, maar dreunen dan een stuk minder.
Snelle levering, zoals altijd prima verzorgd door Bax-shop.

Wat een prachtmonitoren!
Mooi, gestroomlijnd, egaal zwart met een chroom randje rond de speakers. Het Mackie logo licht groen op wanneer de monitoren ingeschakeld zijn. Een fijn detail.
Aansluiten gebeurt in eeen handomdraai, op voorwaarde dat je de kabels reeds hebt. Die worden immers niet meegeleverd! Ik heb gekozen om de monitoren met een gabalanceerde jack in mijn Tapco/Mackie USB interface te pluggen. Volume opendraaien en je bent vertrokken.
Over de klank niets dan goeds. Mooi uitgebalanceerd, met een diep laag, dat je alleen maar zou verwachten bij woofers van een veel groter formaat. Ze kunnen bovendien flink wat volume leveren, wat hen perfect maakt voor kleine ruimtes. Even had ik overwogen om de extra subwoofer aan te schaffen, maar dit blijkt helemaal niet nodig. Deze jongens dreunen heftig!
Ik heb de monitoren samen met de Auralex monitorpads besteld, wat geen overbodige luxe is. De monitoren worden wel geleverd met gummi vlakjes om onderaan te kleven, maar dat volstaat niet als ze op een trillingsgevoelig vlak staan.
Kortom, de MR5mk3 is een absolute aanrader, zowel voor de amateur als voor de professionele producer.
