Pioneer DJ RM-07 coaxial monitor

General

Like many of its competitors, Pioneer has issued a coaxial studio monitor. The RM-07 is the big brother of the RM-05, and as such it's equipped with a larger woofer - a 6.5-inch model, to be precise. Frequencies from 40 Hz to an astonishing 50 kHz pose no problem for the Pioneer monitor, and thanks to its special coaxial design, the chance of phase issues is reduced to a minimum. In regular monitors, the tweeter is mounted above the woofer, and the distance between the two can cause phase differences. Pioneer's RM-07 places the woofer and the tweeter on the same axis, so you won't have to worry about that. As the low and high frequencies emanate from the same point, you get the exact same sound throughout the entire room!

Pioneer RM-07: a powerful monitor

For studio monitors, an honest reference tone is of the essence. With the RM-07, Pioneer has taken all the necessary measures to ensure such a straightforward sound. The monitor's housing, for instance, is made of die-cast aluminium instead of wood or plastic, and has curved contours to minimise external diffraction and annoying resonance. For optimal bass reproduction, the RM-07 is equipped with an AFAST acoustic tube, which reduces standing waves and enables the relatively small monitor to deliver impressive low-mid frequencies. A rugged bass reflex port only adds to the fantastic overall results.

Electronics

Like most monitors in this segment, the Pioneer RM-07 features two amplifiers: one for the tweeter and one for the woofer. They are powered with 50 and 100 watts respectively, which means the amplifiers have a total output of 150 watts. If you like, the monitor allows you to subtly alter its sound output. At the back you'll find EQ dip switches that individually control the low, mid and high frequencies, offering a choice of -4, -2, 0 or +2 dB. Use them to fine-tune the RM-07's output to the acoustics of the room. Located below the EQ, there's a balanced XLR input and an unbalanced RCA connector for your signal input.
