The Moog Matriarch is an impressive analogue synthesizer. It may come across as rather modular at first glance and that's actually not far from the truth. This bad boy is semi-modular, which means several of its modules are fixed. Don't sweat it, though, you can patch away to your heart's desire. Luckily the modules featured on the Matriarch are quite practical so you can produce all sorts of known and lesser known sounds with it. This machine sounds superbly and thanks to stereo delay, exceptionally spacey too.

The Moog Matriarch Sound

You'll have access to four analogue oscillators, including standard waveforms such as sawtooth, triangle, square and pulse. The Matriatch features hard-sync for scream-like effects or subtle timbre adjustments. Modulation possibilities, envelopes, and, of course, an extensive filter are also included. Its semi-modular nature allows for a multitude of patch connectors, both on the control panel and on the back of this beast. The single most beneficial thing about modularity is the fact you can control each and every signal's flow. What's more, you could switch around a couple cables and turn this Moog into a different synth every time you turn it on!

Paraphony for chords

This synth is paraphonic, meaning you can simultaneously produce 1, 2 or even 4 tones. In turn, four oscillators playing the same tones allow you to fiddle with individual frequencies to create a wonderfully warm sound. Sound en mogelijkheden van de Matriarch zijn boven verwachting. Ik ben zeer blij met de eerste resultaten en dat nog zonder patchen en delay. Dat er geen geheugen voor sounds vind ik niet erg, het dwingt je het instrument eigen te maken. Alhoewel een sysex dump ... enfin, het enige dat ik wél jammer vind is dat er een prut snoertje loop van de synth naar de 12 volt adapter, dat had beter gekund en gemoeten. Toch dik 5 sterren omdat ik in sound heaven ben beland.

Ik heb lang geaarzeld met deze aankoop maar dit aanbod kon ik niet afslaan. Verkocht als B-stock maar alles werkt en ziet er gloednieuw uit; zelfs de patchkabels zaten nog in de verpakking. Ze voegt dus wat toe, zelfs aan de Moog One, die ik ook heb. Het laag gaat diep maar het modulatiebereik van het filter is lager dan dat van de Minimoog. Met de Matriarch kun je echter zelf je verbindingen maken, als je wilt, want dankzij de semi-modulaire opzet zijn alle standaardverbindingen al intern gemaakt. Zelfs zonder evaring kun je meteen aan de slag met experimenteren. De dubbele analoge delay klinkt zo goed dat ik Moog er bijna van verdenk een digitale te hebben ingebouwd. De delay maakt het geluid al stereo maar ook het dubbele filter en dito versterker kunnen daarvoor zorgen. Daarnaast kan een modulatiebron zoals een lfo het stereobeeld moduleren. De oscillatoren zijn, anders dan die van de Minimoog, stemvast en zelfs iets te stabiel naar mijn smaak, maar dat kun je aanpassen. De kleurstelling is op zijn zachtst gezegd apart, maar wel logisch en maakt de modules voor oudere oogjes beter leesbaar. Het klavier is van goede kwaliteit en alle klavierboodschappen kunnen zowel via cv als midi worden uitgestuurd. Nadelen zijn er ook: globale instellingen moet je maken met toetscombinaties of via midi system exclusive. Enkele aansluitingen op de achterkant hadden op het bedieningspaneel moeten zitten maar in ieder geval bovenaan het paneel moeten worden aangeduid. Tenslotte had ik graag individuele uitgangen per golfvorm van de oscillatoren gezien en een lfo-stand voor een of meer oscillatoren.
