The Novation Circuit Mono Station is a paraphonic analogue desktop synthesizer with two oscillators and a choice of four waveforms; sawtooth, triangle, square, and sample + hold. You also have a sub-oscillator, a ring mod and a noise generator at your disposal. All in all, you have everything you need to produce rich, versatile synth sounds and there are even three distortion modes that allow you to add even more variety.

It doesn't end there either. There's also a multi-mode filter with high pass, low pass or band pass and each oscillator has adjustable sync and tuning parameters. Effects can be added easily using the modulation matrix and with the three sequencer tracks, music can be played at the touch of a button. There are 32 (4x8) illuminated, touch-sensitive pads that make controlling the Circuit Mono Station a snap. Connecting this synth to your current setup is easy too, thanks to a variety of connection options. De Circuit en de Mono Station zijn 2 heel verschillende apparaten ook al lijken ze veel op elkaar. Waar de Circuit een digitale alleskunner is ben je beperkter qua mogelijkheden met de Mono Station; Slecht Monophonic/Paraphonic in plaats van 2x6 voices en minder verschillende, maar wel analoge, oscillators. Er zitten echter wel veel meer knoppen op die het mogelijk maken om patches volledig op te bouwen op het apparaat zelf wat een welkome afwisseling is komende van de Circuit.
Wat echter wel hetzelfde is is de uitstekende sequencer. Op de Mono station is deze zelfs nog iets uitgebreider met meer patterns en verschillende pattern settings, zo kun je bijv. ook je pattern versnellen of in willekeurige volgorde laten afspelen. Tevens is er een aparte modulatie sequencer waarop je naar wens verschillende modulatie's kunt sequencen.
De Mono Station is eigenlijk een Bass Station II zonder toetsenbed maar met Circuit sequencer; En zo klinkt hij ook. Je kunt er mooie, vette patches uit halen en naar wens live tweaken. De modulatie matrix is krachtig en intuitief, wel mis ik eigenlijk een aparte modulatie envelope naast de amp envelope en ik had het liefst nog een extra LFO gehad.
In het begin viel de mono station wat tegen gezien de beperkingen van een simpele analoge synthesizer; Maar het apparaat is inmiddels met liefde geadopteerd en wordt regelmatig gebruikt als aanvulling in mijn synth chain, met name voor dikke bass-lines.
Het apparaat voelt een stukje luxer aan als de Circuit zelf; Je kunt er minder mee maar het klinkt toch echt een stuk beter als het op de geluiden aankomt die je er wel mee kunt maken. Wat ik wel erg jammer vind is dat je de sequencer niet als poly-sequencer kan gebruiken; Dat zou het apparaat een extra doel kunnen geven maar dat is nu niet mogelijk terwijl het softwarematig volgens mij prima zou moeten kunnen. Ook mis ik de ingebouwde effecten op dit apparaat, die zitten er simpelweg niet op waardoor je als je ze wil toepassen er nog een apparaat tussen zal moeten zetten.
Over het algemeen dus een prima mono-synth met goede sequencer en geluid; Maar verwacht niet de bang-for-buck van de Circuit. In tegenstelling tot de Circuit zijn hier in dezelfde prijsklasse wel goede alternatieven voor te vinden.
