With the all-new Solid Body U-Bass, Kala present a perfectly balanced offset model with a super-short and super-snug 23.5 inch scale length. In fact, the total length of this electric bass comes in at just over 84 centimetres, making the U-Bass a great choice for bassists looking for a more compact, lighter and easier to manage instrument. Show-ready, the Kala Solid Body U-Bass comes pre-wrapped in its own gig bag.
The Kala Solid Body U-Bass: Punching Sound
The solid yet lightweight okoume body comes equipped with a Kala-developed Split-Coil pickup that spits some timeless low-end punch. Dial everything in via the fitted volume and tone controls while, thanks to the deep cutaways, every last one of the twenty-two frets that line the laurel fretboard can be navigated with ease. The installed set of 1:18 ratio machine heads assure you of stable and accurate tuning and, as a sweet final detail, this ultra-comfy little bass comes kitted out with black hardware, completing a solid look.

This bass is a practical and comfortable alternative to larger scale basses. It's pretty well made and is good enough value for money. I bought it at a very fair price from Bax, and found their service to be good.
I expected some intonation issues with a bass of this scale, and sure enough this was the case. Some online reviews of 23 inch scale basses lean heavily on this subject while others don't mention it at all. Anyway, with the adjustability of the Kala bridge I just about managed to achieve acceptable intonation of the E string with the string set it came with, but really I wanted better. In the end I tried fitting the E string from the Blackstar Carry-on bass string set, which is a bit heavier, and is very reasonably priced. This thicker gauge E was immediately better for tuning stability and has enabled an improved set up altogether. Hopefully there won't be any adverse effect from the heavier string over the longer term, but for now it has solved the main concern I've had with the instrument. Overall, a good purchase.

Deze kleine basgitaar zit goed in elkaar, speelt comfortabel en klinkt als een goeie P. Het is wel even flink wennen als je 34" gewend bent. Ik heb de snaren flink omlaag moeten brengen want die stonden op standje contrabas. Daarna werd intoneren een uitdaging, want met zo'n korte mensuur en dikke snaren is dat nie theel eenvoudig. Het enige echte nadeel van de bas is dat de electronica ongeaard is en dat merk je. Haal je hand van de snaren en de ruis vliegt je om de oren. En nee, dat ligt niet aan mijn versterker of stopcontacten, want mijn andere bassen doen dat niet. Ik moet hem zelf nog even goed gaan shielden dus. Al met al een erg fijne, compacte bas die vooral geschikt is om snel mee te nemen. De gigbag die erbij zit is uitstekend ook.
