General

The Ortega Timber Series RGL5EB-CE guitarlele has a fully ebony body finished with a mahogany neck and walnut fretboard. Loaded with six strings, this mini-guitar has the same format as a baritone ukulele, and while the strings are tuned a little higher than standard (A, D, G, C, E, A), it's played in precisely the same way as a standard guitar. This mash-up-style model is great for guitarists seeking that typical ukulele sound without having to pick up a new instrument; is definitely small enough to serve as an excellent travel companion, or just as a more than worthy addition to any instrument collection.

The Bigger Brother

Just like the RGL5EB (a slightly smaller variation on the same theme), this guitarlele has been brilliantly finished with ABS binding, Ortega's own gilded machine heads, and an open pore finish to give the dark wood as natural a look and feel as possible. There are, of course, differences, since the RGL5EB-CE comes fitted with a MagusUke preamp and built-in tuner and volume and tone controls, making it fully stage-ready, and to finish, the deep and graceful cutaway ensures snug playing comfort and eased access to the highest frets.

Wrote the following about Ortega Timber Series RGL5EB-CE Guitarlele

Ik was op zoek naar een goede, kleine, makkelijk spelende reisgitaar. Maar dat viel nog niet mee. Wel stuurde Google mij in de richting van de Guitarlele, als reisgitaar. Omdat ik een grote liefde voel voor de ukelele, liet ik mijn oog vallen op de Gretsch G9126-ACE Guitar Ukulele (Gretch! Fishman Kula pickup systeem! Goede reviews!) . Bleek pas na weken leverbaar.
Ik kon niet wachten en dacht: dan probeer ik de Ortega.
Omdat ik geen referentie heb (nog nooit zo'n ding gehoord of bespeeld) is het moeilijk oordelen.
Daarnaast is het de vraag wat je eigenlijk mag verwachten voor die prijs.
De Ortega zegt een bariton-formaat te hebben, maar is echt niet groter dan een tenor. Dat is jammer.
De klank komt niet in de buurt van een ukelele en lijkt ook niet op een gitaar met capo 5.
Er zit een ongelofelijke galm in waardoor de klanken snel in elkaar overvloeien tot een onheilspellende brei, tenminste in mijn oren. De ingebouwde tuner weet er ook geen raad mee en geeft het in de lagere regionen op. De stemmechanieken lopen soepel, maar op een gegeven moment was ik het constant bij-stemmen wel goed zat.
De MagusUke preamp doet het goed over de Fishman Loudbox, maar ja, die weet overal wel wat van te maken. De guitarlele ziet er mooi uit. Verzorgd en mooi afgewerkt zoals op het plaatje.
Ik heb een avond lang mijn best gedaan om met Deze Onbekende iets van een relatie te krijgen, maar het is me niet gelukt. Ik stuur hem terug naar Bax en wacht misschien op de Gretch.
Maar beter vraag ik hulp bij het vinden van een kleine, maar volwassen reisgitaar.
Mag best wat meer kosten dan 189 euro.
