This is the wah-wah pedal that started it all: the Dunlop GCB-95 Crybaby. Originally designed in the 1960s as a vocal-like effect for organs, it was soon picked up by creative guitar players such as Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton and applied in a way that revolutionised guitar playing. Now, a pedalboard might as well be naked if its missing one of these ‘gas pedals’.

What does a wah pedal do?

The wah-wah owes its name to the ‘wah wah’ effect it creates when you rock the pedal back and forth with your foot. A wah pedal takes a certain part of your guitar-sound range and filters out the rest. Pushing your toe down accentuates the high frequencies within this range, while pushing your heel down accentuates the lower frequencies. By rocking the pedal back and forth, the sound alternates between dull and shrill tones, literally creating a ‘wah wah’ sound.

GCB-95 Crybaby: a simple and robust wah-wah

The Crybaby wah-wah is extremely easy to use. Simply plug your guitar cable into the right jack input on the pedal and connect the left jack output to the instrument input on your guitar amp by means of a cable. Push the pedal all the way down until the switch is pressed and you feel a click. Now it’s just a matter of ‘pedal to the metal’! You can move your foot slowly or quickly, with a steady rhythm or at an erratic pace; anything is possible and the result always sounds great. The GCB-95 has a robust cast-aluminium housing, so it can really take a punch on stage. This wah pedal is powered by one 9 Volt battery or by the optional Dunlop ECB003 AC adapter. The special battery lid at the bottom of the pedal gives you direct access to the battery for quick and easy battery replacement.
