General

Over 40 years after the introduction of the Roland Jazz Chorus in 1975, the JC-120 is still the standard for clean guitar sounds. Everyone who's worked with a modelling amp or modelling software will have heard the term 'JC-clean'. Besides its bright sound, the stereo configuration and the legendary Chorus Circuit ensured it remained popular throughout the years. To celebrate the JC-120's 40th anniversary, Roland released the JC-40. It features the same great stereo setup, chorus circuit and, of course, phenomenal cleans, but in a much more compact and lightweight package. Additionally, it offers 40 watts of power, which is more than enough for small to medium-sized gigs.

JC-40: classic sound in a portable package

Just like the original, the JC-40 allows for plenty of customisation. Thanks to its clean character, the JC-40 is also ideal for use in combination with a modelling pedal, and the FX loop's stereo setup allows for a wealth of possibilities. As far as built-in effects you'll have at your disposal, there's a distortion and of course the famous chorus/vibrato unit. With a separately available foot switch you can control these built-in effects and engage or disengage the FX loop. In short, the JC-40 offers everything you loved about the JC-120, but in a more compact package with a more manageable volume. Deze versterker klinkt heel mooi in het repetitie kot, maar eenmaal thuis stoor ik me enorm aan de constant aanwezige ruis. Deze ruist zonder kabel in en met het volume op zero, ongelooflijk anno 2023. Op de koptelefoon ruist hij niets, dus lijkt met de eindtrap te zijn. Heel jammer want de chorus en reverb zijn super. Ik had deze niet mogen kopen alvorens te testen in een stille ruimte. Ook hoor ik in zwakke passages digitale 'jitter', dat zal een neveneffect zijn van de digitale signaalverwerking, maar dat vertellen ze er niet bij.

De levering kwam goed op tijd aan en de versterker was netjes verpakt. Eenmaal van de verpakking ontdaan en ingeplugd, kwamen er prachtige tonen uit.
Het geluid van de stereo chorus is fantastisch en ook het cleangeluid is heel mooi af te ronden. Tot nu toe heb ik nog niet al teveel aan de distortionknop gezeten, gewoon omdat de clean al zo mooi is. Maar de distortion is zeker niet slecht!
Van tevoren wist ik dat er wat ruis aanwezig zou zijn. Het schijnt dat de versterker erom bekend staat. Ik vond dat dat allemaal redelijk meeviel, behalve wanneer de treble vol omhoog wordt gedraaid. Als ik dan lage noten speel, ruist die enorm... Een beetje raar is dat wel, en hoe harder die staat, hoe harder die ruist. Gelukkig is het niet een stand die ik snel zou gebruiken, want deze versterker heeft zoveel ruimte aan de bovenkant, dat teveel treble behoorlijk scherp kan gaan klinken.
De line-outs zijn ook in stereo en als je even een kabeltje in de koptelefoonuitgang drukt, kun je geluidsloos opnemen met een audiointerface. Persoonlijk neem ik altijd op met twee microfoons ervoor en ook nog de stereo lineout. Dat zorgt ervoor dat je altijd wel iets goed hebt.
Ook heb ik gemerkt dat de lineout heel goed werkt om een basgitaar op te nemen. Een bas speel je liever niet door de speakers, maar via de lineout kun je het signaal toch versterkt op de computer krijgen. Tip!
Je krijgt een heel speciaal geluid wanneer je alle eq dichtdraait, maar de bass voluit zet, net als de reverb en de distortion. Enorm gevarieerd ding. En naar het schijnt werkt die uitstekend met effectpedalen, maar daar heb ik geen centjes voor dus dat heb ik nog niet geprobeerd.
Had geen andere willen kopen.
