General

Bet you didn't see this one coming! Sequential have re-released the Prophet 10 which, for the uninitiated, is basically a double Prophet 5 synthesizer from the 1980s. In total, the new P10 features ten voices with two oscillators each and a noise generator, as well as a filter with ADSR and a master/volume ADSR. Both the original P5 and P10 are monstrous synths in terms of possibilities and compatibility, which explains why they enjoyed such popularity among producers and composers. Meanwhile, the Prophet 10 has become extremely rare and is virtually impossible to find. It remains an icon nonetheless, even if only due to its double keyboard design.

The Features of the Sequential Prophet 10

The new P10 isn't as bulky as its predecessor since both the double keyboard design and the sequencer have been taken out. But who cares, most of us do our sequencing on a computer these days anyway. If you do like to work with an external hardware sequencer however, you can simply use the MIDI and CV/gate connections, so you shouldn't run into any trouble there. Under the hood, the only functional difference with the P5 comes down to the number of voices, which have obviously been doubled to 10 here.

Additional Features

The Prophet 10 is equipped with an amazing touch-sensitive Fatar keyboard with aftertouch, and modern MIDI and USB-MIDI connections. Also, if you ever find yourself missing the sonic character of filters from earlier revisions, you can switch the synth back to an older rev model, and there's a special Vintage control fitted to mix in some of that more unstable, old-school sound. It's a beauty to behold and pure melancholy to hear, but the Prophet 10 does come at a price that not everyone is equally able to work with. If you do have the money to spare, you're getting a genuine piece of freshly revamped and improved pop music history in return!

Als moderne muziek producer die toch vaak het meeste werk in the box doet (want deadlines, revisies, etcetera) was ik op zoek naar een synth die echt een aanvulling is op mijn sound palet en een mooie center piece in mijn studio is. Ik wilde altijd al een synth die een krachtig en diep analoog geluid heeft en daarnaast gemakkelijk en snel in te stellen is. De Prophet 10 is daarin wat mij betreft een van de beste opties die er bestaan. De mid-forward warme sound werkt perfect in songs, wanneer je hem goed kent draai je binnen no-time een geweldige sound, de presets werken gemakkelijk en je hebt het gemak van midi (over USB ook) en elke knop heeft wel een CV channel waarmee je vanuit je DAW bijvoorbeeld toch filter automations kunt intekenen.

Ik werkte hiervoor al jaren met plug-in versies van de Prophet 10(of 5) en hoewel die behoorlijk goed klinken is het toch echt een andere ervaring wanneer je deze synth “echt” voor je hebt staan en echt aan de knoppen kunt draaien. De sounds die ik eruit krijg zijn dan ook vaak krachtiger en inspirerender. Precies waar ik naar op zoek ben.

Ik raad nu de synth beschikt over stack en split modes iedereen aan om voor de P10 te gaan t.o.v. de P5, zo heb je altijd voices genoeg.

Deze synth is wat mij betreft het mooiste Prophet geluid wat er bestaat. De investering is het zeker waard en ik ben dan ook erg blij dat ik niet voor een goedkopere Prophet ben gegaan. Ik heb ze allemaal vergeleken en het classic geluid van de P10 was voor mij de winnaar. Wellicht is het voor live situaties niet de meest handige synthesizer en zou een P6 of OB-6 beter werken (want fx en meer mod mogelijkheden) maar in de studio is dit echt top.

Synthesizer van absolute topklasse. Diep en gedetailleerd geluid, perfecte 1-knop per functie bediening, en de vintage mode werkt echt bijzonder goed. Een Echte Prophet 5 zoals hij hoort te klinken. De prijs meer dan waard voor wie het echte analoge geluid zoekt.
