The Roland AIRA Compact T-8 combines two kinds of classic, Roland-made pieces of kit: three TR drum machines and the TB bass machine, all of which comes wrapped up inside a small, portable housing crammed with effects, controls and a built-in rechargeable battery. Besides a TB-303, the AIRA Compact T-8 serves up the sound of the TR-808, the TR-909 and the TR-60 and takes up no more space than a small tablet. This uber-portable beat-machine offers up to 4.5 hours of use on a full charge and can be pulled out of your pocket as soon as inspiration strikes.

Leuke synth, veel waar voor je geld. Hoewel de sounds heel basic zijn kan je genoeg tweaken om elke keer een andere sound(set) te krijgen.
Snel een beat maken gaat heel makkelijk.
Twee nadelen:
1. De matige mini jack output, die minder gebalanceerd lijkt dan de overige Aira Compact modellen.
2. 32 step sequencer ipv 64 zoals de J-6 en de S-1
Hierdoor ben je vooral in de bass-track gelimiteerd, en worden de beats die je met de Aira Compact series maakt minder interessant.

Maar WAT EEN SOUND uit zo’n klein machientje…

Mooie drumcomputer voor iedereen die hier (voor het eerst) mee aan de slag wil (al dan niet als hobby). Daarvoor is deze ook zeer betaalbaar. Er is veel meer mee mogelijk dan op het eerste gezicht lijkt, maar daarvoor moet je het menu induiken in combinatie met de handleiding. De J-6 (chord sequencer) en E-4 (voice tweaker) zijn leuke uitbreidingen als je meer wilt.

Voor ervaren gebruikers van drumcomputers is dit exemplaar wellicht wat te klein om lekker te kunnen bedienen. En de hoeveelheid geluiden is ook beperkt (subset van 303, 808 en 909), maar wat er is klinkt goed! Overdrive en delay/reverb effecten zijn ook aanwezig.

Het compacte formaat levert als voordeel dat je deze T-8 makkelijk mee kunt nemen. Na het opladen van de interne batterij via USB kun je zeker 3+ uur via een koptelefoon met het apparaat werken.

Van de nieuwe Roland pocket line sprak de T-8 mij het meeste aan. Als je al ervaring hebt met de Roland style sequencers heb je binnen no time een goede beat neergezet. De base (303) werkt ook gebruiksvriendelijk, je kunt deze invoeren via de step sequencer of live noten inspelen.

Pros:
- Compact dus eenvoudig mee te nemen als compacte setup;
- Accu en op te laden met usb-c.
- De unit klinkt gewoon goed, zeker met effecten zoals overdrive, delay en reverb.

Cons:
- Qua drumgeluiden beperkt. Bijvoorbeeld alleen een 909 kick beschikbaar.
- Drumgeluiden zijn een mix van diverse drumcomputers (909, 808 etc.) Je hebt dus geen hele klassieke set.
- Er zijn sneltoetsen maar voordat je deze onder de knie hebt is het veel menu duiken. Het menu is een beetje omslachtig, draaien totdat de juiste setting gevonden is.

Ik gebruik deze nu voornamelijk om op de bank of onderweg. Door het compacte formaat en lichte gewicht is de T-8 hiervoor ideaal. Als vervanging en aanvulling op bijvoorbeeld een pocket operator heb ik zo een leuke set onderhanden.

Voor een meer serieuze setup zou ik wel doorsparen voor bijvoorbeeld een Roland Tr-6s (reeds in bezit). Hiermee is toch wat meer variatie mogelijk qua drumgeluiden.

Al met al zeer tevreden met deze box.
