The diaspora of cultures here in the West means that we get all kinds of restaurants added. But surely it also means an influx of musical movements, and that often includes special instruments. You just don't always realise it. The idea of the music shop is a big pile of guitars, pianos, trumpets and recorders. But for specific regional instruments, you often get no further than a pan flute or ocarina. And that is a shame, as there are fun instruments that most have never heard of. One such instrument is the SOMA Dvine, which takes its inspiration from the Middle East, among others.

Features of the SOMA Dvina

Well, what does it fall under... Is it a kind of cello? In a way, that's what it most resembles. In any case, it is an instrument that can be played more or less like a cello. There are two strings, no frets (but position dots), and the pitch is generally the slightly lower part of the frequencies. Hidden inside is the technology that converts the vibrations of the strings to line signal. So on the outside - apart from the jack connector - you don't really see anything that makes it distinctly high-tech. The whole thing comes with good casing, only the bow you will have to pick yourself. The sound? For our western ears, there is no real comparison, other than the sound-scapes you might occasionally hear in films or documentaries that deal with that region.
