Vandoren reeds: strength 1 to 5

Vandoren reeds are made with different strengths, indicated by a number. These numbers run from 1 to 5, with steps of a half they get stronger and stronger as the number increases. Strength 1 is thus the thinnest and therefore the easiest to make a tone with. This comes at the expense of tone formation and quality. Strength 5 is the thickest reed, but is actually difficult to vibrate and thus produce sound with. However, the sound is fuller and warmer. The further the number of the reed increases, the heavier it is to play, but also the fuller the sound. This is strength 5, suitable for the advanced clarinet player.
