Nowadays, Avid Pro Tools works with a licensing system. That means that with your purchase you're investing in an activation card that you can use to activate Pro Tools after downloading it. This license is a perpetual license that will last forever, and it also includes one year of upgrades and support. If you choose not to extend the license after a year, then you keep the version you have at the time that the 1-year license expires. That is to say, you get to keep any and all updates and upgrades you receive during the year - forever!

- If you want to extend this license, you have to do so within the time limit set by Avid. If you don't extend your license in time, the only way of obtaining a fixed license with upgrades & support is by purchasing a new fixed license.
