Distortion pedals come in all shapes and sizes, but few are based on a component as unusual as the ‘uni-junction transistor’, an old type of semiconductor that is rarely used these days. SOMA builds the core of the Harvezi Hazze’s sound generation around this: a single component that can sound like a distortion pedal, a limiter or a (tone/noise) generator, depending on how you set it up. When you plug in an instrument, the signal first passes through a compressor, then to an amplifier that distorts the signal either gently or aggressively, next through the section containing the ‘uni-junction transistor’, and finally to the section where you fine-tune the sound.

Endless switching between subtle and extreme

Spoil and Spread together determine how intense and sharp the signal’s distortion is: the higher you set the Spread knob, the more intense the distortion. Spoil alters the timbre and the threshold at which the effect kicks in. This allows you to extract effects from the Harvezi Hazze that sound like gating or a kind of cutoff. The switch lets you toggle between soft or aggressive gain, as well as a feedback mode that allows you to create squeals, resonance and even self-oscillation. On the side of the pedal, SOMA has also added six switches that allow you to fine-tune the sound in even greater detail.
