Despite being a relatively young manufacturer, Yamaha has had a considerable influence on the development of the modern drum kit. In fact, it's one of the biggest players in the drum market today. 2017 marks fifty years since the first D20 and D30 models were introduced. To celebrate this fact, Yamaha is producing fifty highly-exclusive 50th Anniversary shell sets. They are based on the Absolute Maple Hybrid series, but are even more luxurious. Only fifty will be available worldwide and each set will be numbered so you'll know it's truly one of a kind. Here at Bax Music, we've managed to get our hands on one of these highly desirable shells sets. Unfortunately, cymbals and hardware are not included.

Yamaha 50th Anniversary Curly Maple Antique Natural Shell Set

This 5-piece shell set consists of a 22 x 18-inch bass drum, 10 x 7 and 12 x 8-inch toms, a floor tom measuring 16 x 15 inches and a 14 x 6-inch snare drum. The shells are made of a combination of Curly Maple on the outside and wenge in the middle and have a total of 8 layers. The toms, floor tom and snare drum all have a shell thickness of 6.6 mm and a bearing edge of 45 degrees, while the bass drum shell is 8.2mm thick and has a bearing edge of 30 degrees. All of the shells have an Antique Natural finish.

Shell hardware

The golden lugs certainly catch the eye and in terms of design, are similar to those found on Yamaha's Maple Custom kits from the early nineties. The die-cast hoops are 3mm thick and the toms are equipped with the familiar YESS III mounting system. The snare drum has 25 high-carbon steel snare wires and a Q type strainer with a DC3 butt end that has proven to be extremely reliable over the years. All of the shells feature special badges. The snare drum comes with a Remo Ambassador Coated drumhead and an Ambassador Clear resonant head. The toms come with Remo Emperor Clear drumheads and Ambassador Clear resonant heads and the bass drum has Remo Powerstroke 3 heads on both sides. The drumhead is clear, while the resonant head features a special 50th Anniversary logo phoenix.
