A hoop is a metal or wooden ring that keeps the drumhead securely in place. The metal triple-flange variety is especially popular. There are also die-cast hoops which guarantee stable tuning, longer sustain and enable a more punchy sound. Metal drummers are big fans of these due to their fast attack and tuning stability. If you prefer an extra dry sound, a sensitive response without too much focus and an average volume, you'll want a wooden hoop, which are especially popular with jazz drummers.
