The sound and design of this set of five high-quality bass strings has been directly based on the legendary feel and response of Spirocore Series double bass strings, but have been specially calibrated for both fretted and fretless long-scale electric basses.

Each of these strings has been handmade using an incredibly flexible steel core that's first wound with silk before being wound with a special nickel-alloy that's then polished to a seamlessly smooth finish. As such, this five-pack of Thomastik JF345 Jazz Flat Wound strings deliver unbelievable depth, a balanced overall sound, and excellent definition when it comes to the low-B string, resulting in a clear foundation tone that's packed with presence. As a final touch and to protect your hardware, the ends have been finished with silk.

Ibanez SRF705 (fretless). Vorige week de originele snaren vervangen door deze omdat er teveel volume- en timbre-verschillen waren tussen de A, D en G-snaren. Op mijn vorige bas (Ibanez Musician) altijd erg tevreden geweest met de Thomastik's. En nu weer. Wat een geluid. Lijken wel roundwounds. Heel veel boventonen, maar niet schel of zo. Juist in het midden waar je het wilt hebben. Eerste dagen tikkie metaalachtig, maar dat was snel weg. Enige puntje van kritiek is dat de B-snaar wat minder gedefinieerd klinkt. Vanwege fretless nog best knorrend, maar de tonen zijn net wat minder scherp. De originele B-snaar was beter. Paar dagen op een D gestemd om 'm versneld 'in te spelen'. Scheelde wel iets. Maar hier valt mee te leven. De andere snaren klinken perfect, en ook mooi in balans.

Zeer goed. Ze zijn wat prijzig, maar ze klinken ook heel solide. Ik gebruik ze op een fretloze akoestische bas en het bijna-standup geluid dat ik er graag uit wil hebben, dat lukt fantastisch. Ik vind ze iets stijver dan Dunlops, maar dat is eigenlijk wel prettig.

Als fretless bassist zijn snaren zeer belangrijk. Niet alleen voor het sparen van je fret(less)board, maar ook voor de sound van je bas zijn kwaliteits snaren een bepalende factor. Op de meeste van men bassen gebruik ik Labella tapewound snaren, maar mijn nieuwe custom fretless heeft een enorm hoge spanning op de nek/snaren en daarop speelde de Labella's dus niet zo vlot. Dan maar een setje Thomastik flatwounds besteld (zowat de meest "loose tension" snaren in productie en het probleem was meteen verholpen. De sound is geweldig! Zeer sterke mids, mooi gebalanceerd hoog en het gebrek aan sub-laag wordt meer dan goed gemaakt door de overvloed aan grollende lage mids. De sound prikt door de miw als een malle! ;)
