General
RME have released an excellent tabletop Firewire/USB audio interface: the Fireface UCX. This interface is only 9.5 inch wide but still incorporates 18 audio inputs and outputs. If you use them all at once, you can still set the sample rate between 44.1 and 48 kHz. You can use the eight analogue channels to their fullest because they are not included in the digital circuitry. All in all, this RME UCX is an intelligently designed interface and ready for the future!
Features of the RME Fireface UCX interface
The 'Hammerfall Audio Core' that we know from the UFX, has been redesigned for extra stability. The additional TotalMix FX software offers flexible routing and effects with a sample rate of up to 192 kHz. The front of the interface is fitted with two MIC/Line inputs, two balanced jack inputs, a headphones output, a selection button for the channels and of course several control LEDs.
iPad possibilities and remote control
Now you can even connect your Apple iPad to the RME and use it as a remote control. You can also connect an optional RME Basic Remote Control that allows you to work within a distance of 5 metres. The back of the interface is fitted with the remaining balanced line inputs and outputs, connectors for the remote control and the MIDI/USB/Firewire. The USB connector is compatible with USB 2.0 and 3.0!

De bijhorende software is een groot pluspunt, hoewel er wel een leercurve aan vasthangt.

Er staat een fout in de productomschrijving namelijk dat de UCX over AES/EBU in en uitgang zou beschikken:

Digitale uitgangen AES/EBU
Dit is echter niet het geval voor dit product.
Voor de rest kan ik deze audio-interface aan iedereen aanbevelen die een hoogwaardige studio-interface zoekt.

En, ik ben nogal een purist als het op kwaliteit aankomt.
Nu groot hoefde voor mij niet, maar ik heb toch graag een paar in en uitgangen.
Initieel spraken we over een RME Babyface. Zeker zo goed. Een stuk goedkoper, maar voor mij waren twee dingen belangrijk. Ik wou een aantal sporen tegelijk kunnen opnemen zonder extra mic ingangen mee te sleuren, en als het ding zou werken met een Ipad voor scratch opnames zou het welkom zijn.
Nu, dan is het niet ver meer zoeken !
Ik ben al even op zoek geweest naar nadelen van dit bakje, en ja, ééntje vind ik wel minder, er is geen grafische weergave van het in en output signaal. Als ie clipt zie je het wel, maar verder weet je eigenlijk van niks, hardwarematig gezien.
Langs de andere kant, de software mixer die er bij zit is een geweldig ding dat dan weer een heel pak voordelen bied. Zelfs in die mate dat ik een tweede klein scherm naast m'n mac heb gehangen speciaal om die interface altijd in het zicht te hebben.
Eigenlijk niets dan lof over dit bakkie.

Ik gebruik de UCX als audio-midi interface voor het gebruikt van Hauptwerk advanced. De UCX levert een uitzonderlijke hoge audiokwaliteit en ultra lage latency. Bovendien worden er standaard echo's en reverbs meegeleverd die goed te gebruiken zijn in combinatie met Dry-samplesets. Het is ondanks de scherpe prijs bij Bax-shop toch een prijzige aanschaf, maar voor audiofielen zonder meer een topproduct.

Hij is op drie verschillende manieren in gebruik, nl.
- als live mixer voor kleine optredens (max 8 à 10 micro´s)
- als outboard voor een analoge mixer (Waves Multirack software)
- als playback voor sound cue´s (Show Cue System software)
Hij zit in een rack samen met een Presonus digimax FS (8 extra I/O) en een IBM T400 laptop.
In gebruik:
Als live mixer is de nieuwe totalmix FX software heel erg geschikt, je hebt een virtuele mengtafel met alles op en aan.
De latency is bijna nul,
Ook het gebruik als outboard met Multi Rack werkt perfect om je favoriete Waves plugins live te gebruiken. De latency roundtrip (op 96 Khz) is 4 msec., dus best geschikt voor FOH en monitoren
Zeer stabiele drivers (ik gebruik nu firewire, zo houd ik mijn usb sloten vrij voor andere toestellen.
Ik gebruik ook een Ipad met Lemur app om totalmix aan te sturen, dus ik kan van waar ook in de zaal mijn mix aanpassen (de nieuwste versie van totalmix FX kan zelfs 4 controllers tegelijk aan)
Kortom, ik ben een zeer tevreden gebruiker.
