General

Part of the Boss Next-Generation Serial GK System, the GK-5 divided guitar pickup can be connected to the GM-800 guitar synthesizer and other Boss-designed guitar synths for a mass of sonic options. The special flat pickup design and included mounting materials ensure fuss-free installation in combination with most modern electric guitars - in fact, the Boss GK-5 even comes with a special bridge mounting plate to support LP-style guitars.

The GK-5: Smaller and Better Than Ever

Unlike standard guitar pickups which send out a combined signal, the GK-5 sends out a signal for each string, giving you a host of options for tweaking the sound. The GK-5 is not only slimmer than its predecessors, it also boasts more stable signal transmission and less noise. Hook it up using a specially-designed Serial GK jack cable and be assured of optimum performance. By the way, hooking it up to the aforementioned GM-800 gives you access to the inspiring synth sounds of the Roland ZEN-Core synthesis system - just saying!

Er is recentelijk een nieuwe firmware voor de Boss GM-800 uitgekomen. Met deze nieuwe firmware gaat het tracken van noten merkbaar beter. De in eerste instantie merkbare latency bij het tracken van noten op de lage E-snaar is zo goed als verwaarloosbaar. De update zou ook bijdragen in het totale trackingsysteem waardoor zogenaamde ghost notes minder voorkomen. Al met al werkt de Boss GM-800 met de Boss GK-5 nu een stuk consistenter en ik kan nu zonder derden software volop gebruik maken van alle mogelijkheden van de Boss GM-800.

Ik had de stille hoop dat de gitaar naar midi omzetting met de Boss GK5 in combinatie met de Boss GM-800 beter zou zijn dan de eerdere gitaarsynths van Roland. Niks is minder waar. De latency op de lage E-snaar is nog steeds merkbaar/hoorbaar aanwezig. Het kan zich nog steeds niet meten met de bijna perfecte latency die ik met de IOS app Midi Guitar 2 van Jam Origin kan realiseren. Gelukkig is de Boss GM-800 super goed aan te sturen via de 5 DIN midi in. Je mist dan wel wat features die je kunt instellen voor de Boss GK5, maar deze wegen niet op tegen de super snelle en foutloze noot omzetting van Midi Guitar 2. De Boss GK5 is naar mijn mening te duur en vooral niet perfect en ik heb hem daarom voor retourzending aangemeld. Misschien dat er in de toekomst nog een firmware update komt wat daar verbetering in gaat brengen, maar voor alsnog is deze oplossing te duur.
