General

The DiMarzio DP161 Steve's Special humbucker bridge pickup is a pickup with a fairly high output, but not in the way you are used to with most pickups. This humbucker was designed by Steve Blucher, an experienced engineer at DiMarzio. He made the choice with this pickup to grab a very wide frequency range instead of a very focused one, which is quite unique for a high-output humbucker. The result is that the low and high frequencies are firmly present, while the mids are pushed back a bit. This gives chords and high notes a lot of definition, as they are not all 'squeezed together', and especially with clean sounds, it almost has a kind of hi-fi sparkling sound characteristic. The Steve's Special is especially suitable for amps that have a lot of tone in the midrange, because the scoop in the mids leaves the pick-attack intact, and with this the individual notes emerge cleanly and not easily too overdriven. So this also makes the Steve's Special perfect for faster lead work.
