The Casio CT-S1: Lots of Sonic Flavours

Casio have loaded the CT-S1 with 61 sounds of higher quality than you'd expect. The section of controls allows you access seven main categories of sounds from a piano, organ, synth and a handful of other instruments, and each category comes in four tonal flavours including modern and vintage. You even get to select that famous Mellotron flute heard in Strawberry Fields Forever and the synth-brass sound that characterises the Van Halen classic, Jump!, plus a fat stack of vintage Casio-synth sounds. Reverb, chorus and delay effects also come built in, while the velocity sensitivity can be set to one of three different curves or turned off completely.

This honourable belief is evidenced by the handle that's been integrated into the design of the CT-S1 as well as by the fact that the keyboard can run on the included power supply or six AA batteries. Heel tevreden. Piano heeft aanslaggevoelige (niet gewogen) toetsen en produceert hele mooie, warme klanken. De casiotone speelt erg fijn en is licht genoeg om gemakkelijk te verplaatsen en zelfs om ermee op de schoot te spelen. Hij ziet er bovendien heel mooi uit, een beetje zoals een Korg B2.

Na het beluisteren van enkele demos op Youtube toch maar besloten om een witte CT-S1 te bestellen. Aarzelend omdat ik Casio eigenlijk altijd als kinder-speelgoed zag. Na het uitpakken bleek al vlug dat het om een stevig en mooi afgewerkt keyboard ging uit heel degelijk en solide kunststof. Daar maak je echter geen muziek mee dus aansluiten en spelen. De ingebouwde luidsprekers klinken meer dan behoorlijk om in je eentje te oefenen, geen vervorming dus prima. Dit instrument komt echter helemaal tot zijn recht als je het aansluit op een mengpaneel en versterker. Plots klinkt een toestel van €305 alsof het 3-4 keer duurder zou kunnen zijn.
Ik heb al een pak synths en keyboards maar deze Casio is perfect als je snel en overzichtelijk de meest gebruikte basisklanken nodig hebt: een goeie piano, een Rhodes, een Wurli, een Hammond, Vox of Farfisa, zelfs de Mellotron van Strawberry Fields zit er in.
Ben er heel blij mee, een prima aanvulling voor mijn studio en handig mee te nemen indien nodig.
