General

These days, USB/MIDI keyboards offer a lot of the same functionality, so it's sometimes hard to be truly innovative. Novation, however, have successfully managed to raise the bar with the 49SL MK3 USB/MIDI keyboard, which can be considered the central nervous system of your studio. It offers standard MIDI controls, synth-style semi-weighted keys with aftertouch, eight encoders, eight faders, and a transport section. On the rear, you'll find two sets of CV/Gate/Mod outputs, DIN-MIDI and USB-MIDI connectors, as well as inputs for your sustain pedal, expression pedal and foot switch.

The Novation 61SL MK3 DAW integration

One of the first things you'll notice about this keyboard is its five colour displays that show you the exact values of the encoders at a glance! What makes this keyboard really special, though, is its integrated arpeggiator and 8-track sequencer. Even though this keyboard can be used with any DAW, it works particularly well with Ableton, and Novation have included Ableton Live Lite and a collection of Loopmasters sounds so you can get started right away. In short, it's a complete product that raises the bar when it comes to USB/MIDI keyboards!

Super ding. Strakke integratie in Ableton met feedback op de displays over welke knoppen je controle hebt. Daarnaast ook nog eens standalone te gebruiken met een sequencer per track (en daar heb je er 8 van!!)

Ideaal werkstation, je kan met dit midi keyboard moeiteloos zowel digitale als analoge synths aansturen. Met de software kan je profielen aanmaken, uploaden naar de SL, en met 2 drukken op een knop laad je de profielen in en kan je aan de slag. Werkt naadloos met Ableton (geen fan), maar werkt ook uitstekend in FL Studio en andere DAW's die ik heb getest.

Vooral de mogelijkheid om het toetsenbord in meerdere zones op te delen en tegelijk (!) meerdere synths aan te sturen met linker en rechterhand is ideaal. Zo speel ik een Bassstation met links terwijl ik een lead (Moog) kan spelen met rechts. Poorten aan de achterkant zijn volledig aan te passen en met de analoge poorten kan je ook je Eurorack aansturen zowel met CV als met Clock & Gate. Ook die kan je trouwens weer aanpassen tot 0-5V or -5-+5V.

Pluspunten:
- Bijna oneindige mogelijkheid om te personaliseren en op te slaan in profielen.
- Tot wel 8 zones in te delen op klavier.
- Ingebouwde sequencer
- Ingebouwde harmonizer/filters
- Midi in/out/thru
- Ingebouwde scales/quantizer
- ingebouwde Arp bij de Sequencer
- Bediening is redelijk intuïtief als je eerder met Novation hebt gewerkt.

Nadelen:
- leesbaarheid van de OLED schermpjes bij fel licht (studio/zon) laat wat te wensen over.
- Als je nog nooit met Novation gewerkt hebt moet je in het begin even zoeken naar alle functies.
