The bigger the MIDI keyboard, the bigger the stack of extras and, since this edition of the Novation Launchkey MK4 comes with a set of forty-nine keys, you're not just getting more playing room but a full bank of eight faders plus a master fader - and more. Since this longer version of the Launchkey isn't exactly portable, it's been built to serve as your central studio multi-tool and writing partner.

The Fourth Generation Novation Launchkey

The Novation Launchkey MK4 doesn't just come with a bank of pads to support clip triggering in performance-based software like Ableton Live, but gives you a bank of sixteen pads, all backed up by polyphonic aftertouch for even bigger and even more dynamic expression. This time around, you also get a fully up-to date and razor-sharp OLED screen, which displays your encoder values in real-time and can also take you through the scales and chords of a specific key, helping out those writers and producers with a little less playing experience. The on-board arpeggiator is another nice perk, giving you a playground for trying out ideas and discovering things that you might never have come up with otherwise. And, last but not least, there's the bulging software package that comes included as standard: Ableton Live Lite plus a few virtual instrument packs to get you up and running straight away.

Prima midi controller in deze prijsklasse. Toetsen zijn goed maar verwacht geen professionele weighted keys.

Verder is het leuk om een scala een encoders, sliders en pads te hebben. Vooral de endless encoders zijn een pluspunt tov de vorige generaties.

Als je met Ableton werkt kan je niet missen in deze prijsklasse!
Goede bouwkwaliteit, fijne toetsen en pads en genoeg pods en faders.
Een top keyboard met diepe integratie in Ableton. De softwarebundel die inbegrepen is is een leuke bijkomstigheid.
De Novation Play plugin is fijn om mee te werken. De Klevgrand plugins zijn een mooie aanvulling van mijn collectie.
Extra midi functionaliteit zoals de chord map en arp zijn goed geprogrammeerd en bieden voldoende aanpassingsmogelijkheden.

Al lange tijd het idee gehad om een midi-controller aan te schaffen om de eerste stappen te zetten in de digitale muziekwereld. 10-tallen reviews bekeken en uiteindelijk uit gekomen bij de Novation Launchkey 49 MK4.

Maar jongens wat is me dit tegen gevallen. Allereerst vond ik de hele installatie van de verschillende aanleverende partijen dramatisch. Vaak opnieuw accounts aanmaken, hard -en software wachtwoorden meerdere keren in moeten vullen. Ik werd er saggerijnig van te meer omdat ik zelf software bouw en ik dacht "dergelijke installatie-procedure kan ik mijn klanten niet aan doen".
Toen zag de software mijn aangesloten Launchkey niet. WTF, ik had zojuist een firmware update gedaan en liet het keyboard d.m.v. een lichtshow zien dat hij driftig bezig was te updaten. De USB driver geïnstalleerd en alles moest toch in orde zijn? Van alles geprobeerd maar niets leek te werken. Uit een soort wanhoopspoging de USB-C stekker omgedraaid en voila ineens herkende de software het keyboard. Naja, een symmetrische USB-C kabel hoort natuurlijk altijd te werken hoe je hem er ook instopt.

Dan de standaard geluiden die Novation zelf meelevert. Ik raakte niet echt in een jubelstemming. Wat je dan in reviews op youtube aan geluiden te horen krijgt is van een compleet ander niveau. Misschien waren mijn verwachtingen te hoog? Maar hoe het ook zij, ik stuur hem terug. Misschien later nog eens een poging doen en rondshoppen voor een ander midi keyboard in een wat hogere prijsklasse.

Overigens is mijn ervaring met Bax prima waar ik het product gekocht heb.
