Traditionally, 61-key MIDI keyboards are the most popular, for the same reason that many keyboards and synthesisers also feature 61 keys: it simply strikes the right balance between size and functionality. This Novation Launchkey 61 MK4 is therefore set to become a popular choice for studio use. In terms of capabilities, it’s a slightly larger version of the Launchkey 49 MK4, with an extra octave for even more playing enjoyment.

New and improved features in the Novation Launchkey MK4

The casing has been completely revamped and is now thoroughly modern, which also means we can say goodbye to the old alphanumeric displays. The Launchkey MK4 features a razor-sharp OLED screen, so the text looks absolutely crisp! Also more in keeping with the times are the sixteen RGB pads with polyphonic aftertouch. We’ve praised the phenomenon of polyphonic aftertouch here on several occasions, and not without reason: it really does offer wonderful expression. Thanks to scales and chords, you can play melodies and chords within a key, ensuring everything sounds harmonious. Great fun to play with! Also great fun to play with is the arpeggiator, which is packed full of ideas. Another highlight is the included software. Alongside the Ableton Live Lite DAW, you get some lovely virtual instruments. In short, a wonderfully comprehensive keyboard.
