General
If you currently own a Focusrite Scarlett interface, but you need more microphone inputs, then this OctoPre preamp is an excellent way to expand on your current setup. It offers an additional eight superior preamps, giving you even more audio possibilities. Naturally, the OctoPre works great with any other audio interface with ADAT functionality. Connecting it is easy: simply hook it up to your existing interface using standard optic cables, and you'll have direct access to the extra inputs in your DAW or Focusrite monitor software. The preamps are equipped with 48V phantom power so you can power your favourite condenser microphones.
More than Just Inputs
As well as vocals, you can also record instruments with the OctoPre. The preamps are prepared for Hi-Z instruments such as an electric guitar, but recording drums with it is no problem either. In addition to the eight mic inputs, this module also has eight balanced outputs, which means you can hook the OctoPre up directly to a console while you record digitally. The audio quality is outstanding with a sample rate of up to 192 kHz in 24-bit audio resolution and a dynamic range of 109 dB!

My problem was finding a way to add more inputs to my Universal Audio Apollo 8p TB3 based project studio. UA interfaces were beyond my current budget so I decided to purchase a Scarlett 18i20 3rd Gen OctoPre at a very reasonable price from Bax. Delivery was prompt as always and over the last week I've been trying it out.
Connection was from the two ADAT outputs of the OctoPre to the two ADAT inputs of my Apollo using short Cinnamon optical leads at my usual recording sampling rate and bit resolution of of 96/24 with a single Word Clock cable running from the Apollo (master) WC out to the OctoPre WC in.
I had feared that I would only get two stereo inputs at 96/24 but I was pleasantly surprised that I got all four showing up in the Apollo's Console software mixer. I was also concerned that there might be a clear difference between the sound of the instruments routed through the OctoPre and a possible increase in latency. In both cases my fears were groundless.
I have two Korg instruments; a Kronos and Wavestate which I routed through my new inputs. The Kronos Berlin Grand piano with low Focusrite pre-amplification coupled with UA digital conversion was effectively latency free and the clarity at the higher frequencies revealed subtle piano action sounds that I hadn't even noticed before while the Apollo added it's usual warmth to the final sound.
I was losing faith with the Wavestate as it's outputs are not as powerful as those of the Kronos or my OB-6. With OcotPre connection and higher preamplification the instrument came to life in a way it's digital synthesis had failed to with the Apollo preamps.
My rating on value and performance is therefore 5 stars. I appear to have stumbled on a winning combination at a very reasonable Bax price. Buy now with confidence if your requirements and expectations are similar to mine!

Werk al een tijd met een Octopre pre-amp. Deze als uitbreiding van mijn Focusrite 18i20 interface.
Voor mijn thuis & op locatie studio werkt deze perfect. Ik neem bands op in semi life setting. Men zegt dat dit een instapversie is en dat de kwaliteit minder is dan van de duurdere merken. Ik hoor het niet. (De luisteraars/consumenten van de opgenomen muziek die dit op een telefoon, bluetooth apparaat of in de auto luisteren ook niet) De kwaliteit van de pre amps is prima, de opnamens komen zuiver in de DAW.
Omdat ik toch nog wat meer sporen wil gebruiken heb ik een tweede Octopre pre-amp gekocht. Om 24 sporen tegelijkertijd op te nemen heb ik helaas wel de focusrite interface ingeruild voor een Audient EVO 16. Die kan namelijk 2 ADAT apparaten aan.
Voor mij werkt de octopre prima, plug & play. Duidelijke display voor de gain en het geheel is solide gebouwd.
Kan qua phatoom voeding soms wat puzzelen zijn omdat de 48v per 4 kanalen gaat.

Prima uitbreiding voor mijn Scarlett 18i8. Als iemand die veel met synths doet vind ik het niet erg dat er maar twee extra mic pre-amps in de OctaPre zitten. Ik heb het idee dat de clock in de OctaPre net wat strakker loopt dan die van de 18i8. Heb geen idee of dat realistisch is, maar ik denk een verschil te horen. Waar de Scarlett audio interfaces soms een beetje budget aanvoelen voelt de OctaPre als een premium product.
Pluspunten:
- Goede level indicators.
- Draai knoppen om de levels in te stellen op de voorkant.
- Stevig gebouwd.
- Mooi uitgevoerd.

Net uitbreiding van studio uitgevoerd met Octa Pre. Ook al zeggen ze dat SCARLET het instapmodel is van Focusrite, voldoet dit meer dan behoeve.

Ik had al een Focusrite Scarlett 18i8, maar had meer analoge ingangen nodig. Ik was op zoek naar een mengpaneel, maar dankzij een zeer goede tip in de winkel heb ik gekozen voor de Focusrite Scarlett Octopre. Zelf nooit aan gedacht, maar ben nu super tevreden met deze uitbreiding. Het werkt prefect samen met de 18i8 en is makkelijk in te stellen. Alles klinkt nu veel zuiverder. Het belangrijkste voordeel: ik kan nu ook mijn oude synthesizers naar Ableton routen om op te nemen en nog extra effecten erop te zetten. Snel te koppelen met een toslink kabel zodat alles zuiver klinkt. En geen stof meer in de schuifmeters van mijn oud mengpaneel.
