To connect an external microphone to a voice recorder or field recorder, all you need is a recorder microphone fitted with a mini-jack plug - which you'll be able to find right here.
Recording Audio with a Built-in Smartphone Omni-Mic
Any smartphone features a built-in microphone that you can record clear and understandable speech with, and while these microphones are great for phone calls and voice notes, they're less designed for journalists, podcasters or even musicians who demand more professional audio quality. Using an external microphone that you can plug into a phone or a pocket recorder will always sound better than the microphone built into your phone. The frequency range is much wider, the microphone can handle a greater sound pressure level without the getting distorted and often, they capture sound in stereo, meaning that your recordings will sound far more spacious and three-dimensional.
Stereo Microphones for Voice Recorders & Smartphones
If you want to make clean, good quality recordings using your smartphone, then plugging in an external microphone is always recommended. This could be a microphone with a 3.5mm mini-jack plug, but if your phone doesn't have a mini-jack port, you can also find microphones fitted with Lightning or USB-C plugs in our USB microphone department.
XLR Handheld Microphones for Voice Recorders
Almost all professional microphones are connected up via an XLR cable, so if you want to record with one of these microphones, you'll need to make sure that your voice recorder or field recorder has an XLR port. In our field recorder department, you'll find an array of recorders fitted with one or more XLR ports.
