This Omnibook contains over 50 transcribed solos by jazz pioneer John Coltrane. These solos are actually compulsory work for any jazz student to analyse and write out. The way Coltrane phrases and the ladders and tone steps he uses in his solos have been hugely important in the continuation of bebop jazz and later avant garde free jazz. This book provides an excellent account, note by note, of exactly what Coltrane played. The book was originally intended for tenor saxophone students but is suitable for any Bb instrument, so also for trumpet, soprano sax or clarinet, for example.

John Coltrane - Omnibook

John Coltrane is one of the most influential musicians in jazz history. He initially started out on clarinet and alto saxophone, but soon swapped these for a tenor saxophone. Later, he would also play soprano saxophone extensively. The first solo Coltrane recorded was with Dizzy Gillespie's band. The song is called 'We love to boogie' and was recorded in 1951. In the mid-1950s, Coltrane succeeded tenor sax colleague and superstar Sonny Rollins in Miles Davis' quintet, and later sextet. On the most legendary jazz record of the 20th century, 'Kind of Blue' by the Miles Davis Sextet, Coltrane played peerless solos that are still analysed with great interest today by musicians around the world. Solos by Coltrane at live concerts could be very long. The record is said to stand at 2 hours and 56 minutes. His playing style can be described as intense and emotional. One of Coltrane's best-known compositions is 'Blue train'.
