Features of the Ambeo VR microphone

The Ambeo VR Mic captures sound via four compartments and sends four separate signals as well. With the included cable, you can connect the mic's outputs to the four inputs on your interface or recorder. The compartments are arranged according to the Ambisonics principle, which is a type of technology that's been around since the seventies, but because it was so complex, it was never able to be further developed until now. With the Ambeo VR Mic, you can finally surround your audience with 3D sound!

Coding and decoding

The complexity of Ambisonics has to do with the editing process. It's not just a matter of getting the signal from each compartment to the corresponding speaker—the signals need to be added and subtracted from each other to end up with the correct distribution of sound. You could compare it to the mid/side recording technique, only it involves four mics instead of two. Thankfully, the Ambeo VR Microphone comes complete with a handy plugin that does all the difficult calculations for you.
