General

Harking back to old-school seventies monitors, the Palmer STUDIMON 5 bi-amped studio monitor does things in style. This solid studio tool has a 0.75 inch tweeter teamed up with a 5 inch woofer to deliver neutral sound, while around the rear, a balanced XLR and TRS jack input have been fitted for hooking up an audio interface or other audio gear and a volume control is provided for tweaking the output.

The Palmer STUDIMON 5 Studio Monitor

The STUDIMON 5 has a bi-amped setup, meaning that the tweeter and woofer are driven by two dedicated amplifiers to deliver a total output of 60 Watts, which is more than enough for a monitor of this size. The 70Hz to 20,000Hz frequency range and 2,500Hz crossover range is just as perfect for smaller studio spaces, and it all comes wrapped in a neat cabinet with birch wood sides.

Ik heb deze monitor gekocht vanwege onderstaande eisen:
1. Analog versterking, class D versterker kunnen koud klinken in mijn oren.
2. Geen extra toeters en bellen. Aan/uit knop en volume control.
3. Ik wilde dat hetbij mijn zelf gemaakte multiplex hout dj booth paste. Aangezien de speaker een soort multiplex zijpanellen heeft.

This one was a trial to replace my Fostex I had before which unfortunately had to be returned even though it was a good one I liked a lot. This Palmer Studimon 5 was quite a revelation. Very nice built, a class A/B amp stage with a lot of headroom and still very compact (Using it as a monitor and keyboard monitor - 2 pieces). Has massive headroom. OK, consider it is still a 5" bass/mid driver and do not expect earth shattering low bass. But it does ok for my purpose. Also builds a satisfying stereo stage and resolution is good enough for me. In this price range I would recommend it. Mind you, only level control. No room eq and other filters. But I rather have a barebones good quality monitor and do filtering outside (e.g. a DSP controller) which usually offers way more than the built in filters (except if you by Neuman or Genelec). Anyway, really recommend this one here for the price.

Om te beginnen was ik nogal verbaasd toen ik opmerkte dat er nog geen reviews over deze studiomonitoren zijn, aangezien ze veel meer bekendheid verdienen. Het zijn geweldige monitoren, die uitermate geschikt zijn voor kleinere ruimtes. het geluid klinkt overal heel neutraal en gedetailleerd. Ik vind het persoonlijk ook erg fijn dan de monitoren niet doordreunen door het hele huis; zodra je de kamer uitloopt hoor je ze amper meer. Hierom is het wel van belang dat je de monitoren plaatst zoals dit omschreven staat in de gebruiksaanwijzing. Ook het stereobeeld van deze monitoren is echt verbluffend; het lijkt net alsof je overal om je heen speakers hebt staan.
De monitoren zijn trouwens ook echte eye-catchers voor in je home-studio, wat niet geheel onbelangrijk is. het design is heel verfijnd, en alles oogt erg stevig.
Voor professioneel gebruik missen de monitoren in mijn mening wel wat instellingen als het gaat om akoestiek. Dit valt uiteraard wel na te bewerken met bijvoorbeeld equaliser, maar het was makkelijker geweest als dit een standaard feature was op bijvoorbeeld de achterkant van de speakers (waar overigens nog genoeg ruimte is daarvoor). Maar ondanks dit ben ik enorm tevreden met mijn nieuwe - en tevens eerste - paar studiomonitoren. ik raad ze zeker aan voor iedere beginnende producer of enthousiaste musicus die op zoek is naar mooie studiomonitoren.
