Synthesizers by Roland feature the latest technology, like the innovative ACB (Analog Circuit Behaviour) engine found on their AIRA series products. ACB has been widely acclaimed for authentically reconstructing the sound and behaviour of analogue synths from the past. Roland's SYSTEM-8 PLUG-OUT synth is equipped with a highly advanced ACB chip that has a polyphony of 8 voices, 3 oscillators, high resolution filters and drives a number of LFOs. The versatile engine produces everything from classic analogue pad sounds to bass and lead synths to fresh, dynamic sounds and space-filling structures that are coveted by modern sound designers. In addition to its own sound engine, the SYSTEM-8 has the ability to control 3 Plug-Out software synths. JUPITER-8 is included, and the JUNO-106 will soon follow.
The System-8 Plug-Out Goes All-In
If the names JUPITER-8 and JUNO-106 have already put a smile on your face, it's about to get even bigger. Optional Plug-Outs like SYSTEM-100, SH-01 and PROMARS all work with the SYSTEM-8. In performance mode, it's possible to use the internal synth engine in combination with the Plug-Outs to create a super synth with layered voices and custom splits. Thanks to the intuitive operating panel with its many knobs and controls, creating sound is child's play. Filters and effects include a side-band filter, overdrive, fuzz, delay, chorus, reverb and plenty more.

Synthesizers allow you to create your own sounds, something Roland understands like no other. That's why the SYSTEM-8 features a number of handy tools. You can record, playback and edit loop sequences easily using the polyphonic 64-step sequencer.The arpeggio function with quick-access knobs make it possible to quickly change patterns and styles, and thanks to the chord memory, chords can be played with one finger. There's even a built-in vocoder. The SYSTEM-8 is easy to integrate into any studio using the various connectors that include USB, MIDI and CV/gate. The System-8 engine offers a host of unique FM oscillator variants on on top of the standard waveforms that give the System-8 a voice of its owns that can be combined in performance mode with any three of currently loaded classic synth engines to create an almost unlimited variety of novel cross-over sounds.
Great interface with the majority of controls available at the top level which makes it a great synth for someone who wants to start their own personal journey into the the land of sound synthesis.
Top marks to Roland for creating such a conceptual leap forwards in accessibility and practicality for both the home studio enthusiast and gigging musicians.

Geluiden maken gaat super snel, omdat vrijwel iedere parameter een eigen knop heeft. Geen geneuzel met menutjes etc. Je bedenkt iets en binnen 30 seconden heb je in grote lijnen het type geluid wat je zoekt. En het is haast onmogelijk om hem echt slecht te laten klinken! Eén grote sweet spot! En typisch Roland karakter!
Ik heb ook even de Roland JD-XA gehad, maar ondanks dat die gedeeltelijk analoog is, vond ik de virtuele analoge System-8 veel beter (rauwer) en typisch analoog klinken.
Daarnaast kun je de synth engines allemaal via Roland Cloud als plugin in je DAW krijgen, waardoor je met 1 druk op de knop een geluid dat je op je hardware hebt gemaakt in je DAW krijgt zonder de audio te moeten opnemen. Of andersom. Je kan de plugin ook als libarary gebruiken, zodat je onbeperkt patches kan opslaan op je pc. Dat is voor mij ook een dikke plus qua workflow!
Enige minpunten die ik kan bedenken:
- Om de één of andere reden is er geen unison detune en ook geen detune stereo spread optie. Sinds de laatste update hebben de polyfone plug-outs een "circuit mod" optie (= per voice variatie in dingen als pitch, envelope tijden etc), waarmee je unison detune enigszins kan nabootsen. Hopelijk voegen ze deze opties (unison detune en stereo spread) toch nog ooit een keer toe in een update.
- Het aantal patches is echt laag: 64 patches per engine (dus 265 totaal). Aangezien het zo leuk en snel is om nieuwe sounds te creëren, heb je die zo vol geschreven. En het is ook niet mogelijk om bijv. dezelfde plug-out 2x in te laden zodat je 2x 64 patches hebt. Dus het kan zijn dat je nog genoeg ruimte hebt in een andere plug-out slot, maar dat je toch al vol zit bij je favoriete plug-out en dus geen nieuwe patches daarvan kan opslaan. Het is wel mogelijk om patches op te slaan naar en te laden vanaf je SD kaart, maar dit werkt erg omslachtig.
Ondanks deze minpuntjes, toch afgerond 5 sterren, omdat alle voordelen deze kleine minpuntjes meer dan goed maken!

Enkele jaren geleden heb ik mijn Juno 106 verkocht en ik begon hem toch wat te missen. De directheid van het programmeren en natuurlijk dat geluid! Ik had echter niet veel zin om opnieuw een originele te kopen aangezien ze toch oud en onbetrouwbaar worden. Om nog maar te zwijgen van de prijzen. Ik heb enkele alternatieven zoals, plug-ins of de Boutique overwogen maar ben uiteindelijk voor de System-8 gegaan. Voor het geluid en omdat deze nog zoveel meer kan.
En ik ben er zéér tevreden over. Met het plug-out systeem van Roland krijg je in feite 4 synths in één. Met de laatste software komt hij zelfs standaard met de Jupiter-8, Juno en JX-3P modellen. En deze klinken echt geweldig, zéér authentiek. Ik herken onmiddellijk mijn oude Juno. Maar verder is de System-8 gewoon een prachtige synth, veelzijdig, karaktervol en nodigt echt uit om te spelen, wat ik soms wel wat mis bij moderne synthesizers. Een moderne klassieker !
De looks zijn natuurlijk persoonlijk maar ik vind die zwart-groen combinatie er best goed uitzien. En in het echt veel beter en minder flashy dan op foto, zeker met gedimde leds. Het is een licht toestel maar degelijk gebouwd met een goed keyboard en knoppen die betrouwbaar aanvoelen.
Een B-stock toestel met een interessante prijs! Toestel was 100% in orde, met alle accessoires erbij, enkel de doos was lichtjes beschadigd zoals in de beschrijving stond. Voor het weekend besteld, maandag geleverd zoals ik had gevraagd. Zeer tevreden!
