With Flux, there’s no need to touch it. SOMA has launched a synthesiser that you play using two magnetic ‘bows’ held between your fingers, without having to touch the instrument. This principle is inspired by the well-known Theremin, but operates entirely magnetically rather than capacitively, resulting in more stable and precise control. This allows you to generate more precise tones with less of the ‘wobbly’ or unstable effect typical of a Theremin. With your right hand, you control pitch and volume; with your left hand, you can adjust up to twelve sound parameters. This allows you to control up to seventeen independent parameters, all in real time. And with the separately available Flux Breakout Box, you can connect Flux’s gestures to other gear via CV control outputs!

One instrument, endless possibilities

Because the arcs have two magnetic poles, Flux registers not only position but also direction and angle. Turning your right hand over instantly changes the octave, allowing you to span six octaves without moving the keyboard. Tilting adds two extra modulation parameters. The left hand controls timbre, modulation and rhythm via sensors that operate either independently or in conjunction, depending on the selected algorithm. Flux operates in mono, duo or polyphonic modes and features a percussive mode for drum and percussion sounds. With high-quality DSP, converters and analogue hardware, you’re assured of a top-quality sound, and thanks to presets, you can easily switch between various configurations and tunings. The SOMA Flux isn’t for everyone: it takes some practice, but in return it offers you an utterly unique way of playing that you won’t find anywhere else!
