General

The Ortega Mini/Travel Series RGLE18ACA 1/8-Size Guitar is a guitarlele. With a 61 cm scale, it is not very much bigger than a concert ukulele. The recommended tuning is A-D-G-C-E-A, which is actually the standard guitar tuning but 2.5 notes higher, as if you were to put a capo on the fifth fret of a guitar so. So you can play the same chords, scales and melodies as on your guitar, they just sound a bit higher. The solid top, like the rest of the body, is made of acacia wood, a beautiful type of wood that provides not only a beautiful look but also a wonderfully warm sound.

Small size, many possibilities

Its compact size makes this instrument perfect for travelling, as a practice instrument you can take anywhere or to work out ideas wherever and whenever you want, without the hassle of a large set-up. Even young guitarists for whom the neck of a standard guitar is still just a bit too wide can get started with this. Thanks to the built-in pickup and preamp, you can also connect this guitarlele to an amplifier, adjust tone and volume with a handy rotary knob and there is also a tuner. Wrote the following about Aquila 96C Super Nylgut Guitarlele Strings (A-D-G-c-e-a)

I bought these strings for my Cordoba Mini guitar that has a 510mm scale length (just over 20 inches) and tunes to A just like a classical guitar with a capo on the 5th fret (NOTE: IT IS NOT the Mini II that has a longer scale length and tunes to standard E). It was a previously owned one from a music store and came strung with new ball-end full scale classical guitar strings that sounded muddy and dead. These Aquila 96C Guilele/Guitarlele strings are recommended for A-tuned instruments with a shorter scale length of 17 inches (432mm) which is normal for a Guilele, but I thought i would test them anyway. Usually the same strings will feel tighter on a longer scale length than on a shorter scale length instrument and 78mm (3 inches) is quite a difference. I am very pleased with the sound. The strings feel and sound more alive and the mini guitar rings better. It sounds more snappy and a bit more like a guilele than a scaled down classical guitar, and that is what I wanted.
