Stick your drums through this compressor and watch them explode; stick the vocals through them and see them magnified to absurd proportions: and stick those raw-sounding guitars through them and watch as they're pushed to the fore.

The Warm Audio WA76-A: A Modern Classic

This might actually be too much of a good thing, since the WA76-A doesn't just deliver the throwback charm but the modern convenience. Using the side-chain filter, the compression can be trained to respond less heavily to lower frequencies, giving you way more control over the chaos and retaining the bottom end. Using the mix control knob, the processed signal can be blended with the unprocessed signal, so you can keep all of the smack and grit of the original signal while pulling back on the intensity.
