General

Based on one of the first European tube microphones from the late 50s, the WA-251 serves as proof that the engineers over at Warm Audio know their classics. For all we know, they've travelled to the far corners of the world to find the parts that have resulted in a sound that translates as closely to the original as possible. Since the WA-251 offers cardioid, omni-directional and bi-directional pickup patterns, the possibilities in terms of set-ups are almost endless. The fitted JJ 12AY7 tube and CineMag Transistor add unrivalled richness and liveliness to your recordings. Of course, a jewel of a microphone like this one shouldn't just be stuffed in the same box as your cables and adapters and therefore comes complete with a deluxe wooden case, power supply, Gotham cable and shock mount.

Wrote the following about Warm Audio WA-251 Tube Condenser Microphone

Really happily suprised with the sound of the WA251, Thick and warm, and plenty of high mids so cuts through the mix with minimal to no processing required. Also gives a really nice audible tube saturation to the vocal (which saves me doing it with plugins in the mix). All in all a very good sounding mic for vocals and acoustic guitar especially, good build quality on my unit, the product box comes with a nice thick foam that is easily transferable into a hard flight case for traveling. 8/10 for sound quality. 8/10 for build quality. 10/10 for price to performance.

Considering that to get to the 9/10 in sound quality you would have to add another £1000 to your budget and to get the 10/10 another £15,000 the WA251 is a great choice for entering the high quality mic space for a reasonable price.

Warm Audio heeft weer eens een winnaar te pakken met de WA-251, weliswaar niet een één op één reproductie van de legendarische ELA M251 maar 'close enough for jazz' en tegen een zeer interessante prijs.

Excellent voor vocals -en niet alleen vrouwenstemmen- maar ook perfect voor akoestische gitaren, piano en als drum overhead of room mic.

Geen overdadige top end boost of low end boom maar heel veel 'vintage' definitie in de oh-zo-belangrijke mid frequencies.

Slim geselecteerde componenten met de (3U?) messing, side terminated CK12 capsule, JJ buis en CineMag transformator.

Shockmount is een beetje ouderwets maar functioneel en voorzien van twee reserve elastieken. Voeding is solide. 7-pins Gotham kabel is mooi meegenomen.

Beetje jammer alleen dat de hard-foam in de originele doos net te groot is voor zo'n standaard gereedschapskoffertje van de plaatselijke bouwmarkt.
