If you play a wind instrument, you probably are aware that recording it by playing into an ordinary condenser microphone is not the best way to go. It is a lot more comfortable to have the freedom to decide yourself how you want to hold your wind instrument without immediately being out of range of the microphone. This is why AKG have developed a special microphone with a clamp that can be fastened to the instrument. Thanks to the standard XLR plug, you can plug the signal into any ordinary mixer. The tones are picked up by a condenser microphone which results in high-quality output. AKG C519M microphone for wind instruments (XLR connector)

Bought this to replace a sennheiser clipon mic I used for gigging on my trombone after the lead on the sennheiser started to crackle whenever it was flexed.

This seems miles better. The lead itself is about 5 times the diameter of the sennheiser lead and looks much more robust. It also unclips from the microphone assembly so if anything untoward does happen to the cable it can easily be replaced without having to bin the microphone as well! I was a bit wary about needing 'phantom' power (48v) from the sound desk (the sennheiser was a dynamic mic so didn't need it), but it's just a button on the desk and every sound engineer should know all about it. Mine did. Just make sure you tell them. Foam cover reduces breath noises and the base response seems much better than my sennheiser. Very happy bunny so far.

Deze microfoon heeft een dikke draad (tenminste die versie die ik in 2013 heb besteld). Wel goede ervaringen met de microfoon, maar vanwege de dikke draad hangt er heel wat gewicht aan je instrument. Wij gebruiken deze nu alleen op de blaasbas en baritons, omdat die geen last hebben van het gewicht. Met een trompet of trombone is dat echt wel een nadeel. Wij hebben dezelfde microfoons eerder (tien jaar geleden) ook gekocht, maar toen hadden ze een hele dunne draad. Die gebruiken we dan nu maar voor de trompetten :-) Misschien dat de dunne draad weer terug komt?
Een ander nadeeltje is de plopkap, als die erop zit weet je niet meer wat de voor- en achterkant is. Een stipje typex doet wonderen!
Qua geluid wel erg goed, van trompet tot blaasbas is het bereik voldoende (voor live weergave) en zelfs met de microfoon bijna in de beker toch geen vervorming. Door de karakteristiek ook weinig overspraak, ook natuurlijk omdat je zeer dicht bij het instrument het geluid op kunt pikken.

Gevoeliger voor feedback (rondzingen) dan Sennheiser 908 (condensator) en 608 (dynamisch). De klem is gefixeerd aan het geheel, maar mijn exemplaar was niet helemaal uitgelijnd met de microfoon-kop, waardoor deze steeds scheef leek te staan. Buigbaar gedeelte is vrij stug en veert terug. Ik heb 'm uitgeprobeerd op de sax, uiteindelijk voor de Sennheiser 608 gekozen: geen van bovengenoemde nadelen, goed geluid en voordeliger.
