General

The MXR MC402 Boost/Overdrive provides both a classic overdrive and a crisp, uncoloured +20 dB volume boost. You can control these two functions separately with the two footswitches and the four rotary knobs. In creating the pedal, MXR collaborated with Custom Audio Electronics, the maker of effects systems for leading guitarists. Thus, the very clean boost circuit from this stompbox has long been used by many a professional!

The features of the MC402

The overdrive of the MC402 Boost/Overdrive sounds old-fashioned warm and provides sustain and punch, without colouring the sound. Go from a modest bluesy overdrive sound to the rawest metal distortion. Moreover, the overdrive is hugely dynamic: turn back the volume knob on your guitar and notice how well the pedal responds to even the subtlest touch. Other very positive features of the MC 402 are its easy operation, true hardwire bypass and indestructible housing!

Ik heb vele en vele distortions en overdrives gehoord, maar dit is echt wel de slechtst klinkende overdrive die ik ooit heb gehoord. Ik kon echt geen instelling vinden met mijn strat waardoor ie lekker klonk.

Geen fijn pedaal. De boost doet wat ie moet doen: gewoon je pre-amp een duwtje in de rug geven. De overdrive aan de andere kant is een verhaal apart. Hij is fuzzy maar niet op een goede manier. Hij klinkt te scherp met de toon omhoog en hij klinkt te dof met de toon omlaag; er is geen "sweet spot". Ik bleef maar draaien aan de knoppen maar hij werkt gewoon niet voor mij. Alhoewel, als je op zoek bent naar een vol fuzz pedaal voor BASgitaar, dan is dit misschien wel iets voor je. Hij klinkt aardig goed met voldoende low-end met mijn P-bass. Helaas is hij voor de gitaar niet geschikt.

Even voor de duidelijkheid. Dit is eerder een fuzz/distortion met boost dan een overdrive. Koop dit niet als je op zoek bent naar een creamy blues tone of iets dergelijks, het is absoluut geen tube screamer om maar eens iets te noemen. De boost-sectie is prima en geeft je vrij clean de nodige extra decibels maar de drive sectie is erg fizzy en fuzzy. Geschikt voor tones van 60´s fuzz tot aan vies vadsige sludge tones a la Melvins en dergelijke, ook voor flink verzadigde fuzzy leads, heel vol geluid! Strakke staccato metalriffs is ie ook niet voor trouwens, ook weer, te fuzzy. Ik heb er zo wel mijn nut voor maar denk dat de naam voor velen misleidend is. Ik geef hem 4 sterren, ben er zeer tevreden mee, -1 ster voor de misleidende marketing van MXR. Ze hadden hem gewoon the Sleazy Sludger moeten noemen of zo. Als je van Stonerrock, Noise en betonmolens houdt, een absolute aanrader, gewoon de gain vol open en blazen maar.
