General
Since 1985, Roland's legendary Octapad has been a useful addition to the drum kits of both amateur and professional drummers. It all started with the popular Pad-8, and the more advanced Pad-80 that was released after that. Neither of these percussion pads were capable of controlling external MIDI sources, however. The new Roland Octapad SPD-30 is equipped with a large collection of high-quality samples. Each of its 600 percussion instruments can be individually edited.
The sounds of the SPD-30
The SPD-30 offers fifty diverse kits. Not only classic acoustic rock and jazz kits are included, but a wide selection of percussion instruments from all over the world is at your disposal as well. Characteristics such as tuning, attack, timbre and volume can be adjusted, enabling you to create a fully personalised percussion pad. A number of ambience effects, an equalizer, a limiter and a wide range of multi effects can also be used to add flavour to your sound.
Pads, triggers and connectors
Each of the eight pads of the SPD30 Octapad has an excellent response and is capable of rejecting crosstalk. It is possible to connect up to 4 additional pads with double triggering and a hi-hat controller. The acoustic drum triggers from Roland's RT series are also compatible. The Octapad is fitted with a headphone connector, a mix input and line outputs. The MIDI IN and OUT and the USB MIDI port allow you to control external sources.
Additional features
The compact and exceptionally rugged SPD 30 is equipped with a number of interesting additional features. Thanks to the backlit LCD display, you can operate it even on the darkest stages. The Octapad features a phrase loop function, which enables you to record and loop rhythm patterns, while adding up to three additional layers. You can even store these patterns, by connecting an optional USB memory device.

Je kunt je creativiteit de vrije loop laten met dit indrukwekkende apparaat. De geluiden zijn van ontzettend hoge kwaliteit en de pads zijn heerlijk bespeelbaar.
Door de handige draaiknoppen blader je zo door het menu en andere functies.
Daarnaast krijg je via Roland nog eens extra garantie.

Het verder uitbreiden van de module met externe triggers is ontzettend makkelijk. Gewoon plug and play, al is het handig om in het menu even aan te geven welke externe trigger je hebt ingeplugd. Op deze manier kun je ook een klein oefensetje samenstellen, die je gemakkelijk overal mee naar toe neemt. De SPD-30 is echter ontworpen als percussiepad. Iets wat duidelijk te horen is wanneer je op de pads gaat roffelen. Zeker buzz rolls klinken verre van natuurlijk.
Je haalt er dus geen volwaardig electronisch drumstel mee in huis, maar wel een percussiepad met geweldig veel mogelijkheden en een uitstekende geluidsmodule. De bediening is erg gebruiksvriendelijk, maar om alle mogelijkheden van de Octapad ten volste te benutten zal je toch echt even de gebruiksaanwijzing door moeten lezen. Deze is overigens duidelijk en leest vlot weg. Bekijk zeker even de filmpjes op youtube en laat je overtuigen. Waarschijnlijk de beste 700,- die ik ooit heb uitgegeven!
