Cracking noises could be the result of a defective instrument cable, but they don't necessarily have to be. If these noises occur when you adjust the tone or volume of your guitar or bass, the potentiometer is likely worn out. The Alpha ALP500-B44 metric potentiometer is an affordable replacement part. Thanks to its 500K linear taper, this model is perfect to serve as a tone control for guitars with high-output pickups such as humbuckers. The split shaft makes it suitable for most knobs (without screw).

Please note: this potentiometer features a coarse shaft with 18 teeth and is only suited for coarse knobs. These knobs can be found on guitars from Japan, China, Korea, and Indonesia. For American knobs, it's best to use potentiometers by brands like Fender and CTS.
