We've all been there: you've just shelled out for a massive orchestral library that came pre-packed with brass instruments, but when you finally get around to making that epic, world-shaking Bond-theme, that brass section just won't cut it. While you might get a trumpet and trombone, and maybe a saxophone, they're just not going to give you what you want - the sound of a full-on big band style ensemble. The problem is two-fold and the first part is to do with playing style. A conventional virtual orchestra has been put together to play more reserved music, while a good big band will sound entirely different in terms of the articulations alone. The second part of the problem is more technical. Big band brass uses different kinds of mouthpieces that allow a musician to play in an even higher pitch and create a more 'screaming' sound. This kind of sound just isn't done in a classical setting, so you just won't be able to find the same mouthpieces and therefore the same quality of sound in an orchestral library. Now that we've explained why it exists at all, it's time to take a look at the numbers. This EastWest Play software compatible library is a 32 gigabyte library made up of two trumpets, a trombone, and a saxophone. The saxophone is essentially a baritone, tenor and alto sax in one, since the range depends on the selected octave. Besides a generous stack of genre-specific phrases and licks, you get access to a mass of articulations, including sustains, crescendos, legatos, and more than enough usable round-robins. Other typical big-band effects have been included like falls (think the end of The Pink Panther theme), growls and trills. Basically, everything you don't get in an orchestral library, you'll get here, and the applications don't stop at soundtracks or even just big band styled productions, but extend to pop and essentially, anything else in need of that distinctive flair. In any case, this library comes fully backed up with precisely the sound quality you'd expect from an EastWest title.
