General

In the 1980s, you had roughly three types of synthesisers; FM, analogue and sample-playback. Many well-known synths from this era can be categorised into those groups. The PPG is somewhat of an outlier, but that explains why it became a popular (and not very mainstream) synth. The PPG plays bits of wave, and in fact this puts it in the sample-playback group. But actually, it is a device that plays short cyclic waveforms. Rather lo-fi even. But in combination with the filter, you could still build very special and warm sounds with it. The essence of the PPG is well summarised in IK Multimedia Syntronik Blau (referring to the blue colour of the PPG). Dozens of historic PPG sounds in your computer, for a bargain!
