Making a beat might look easy, but even the best producers and composers have to at least quietly confess that it can actually be pretty tough to shape a solid beat. For starters, a fair amount of patience and the right mindset is essential - and a lot of people struggle with this already. Luckily, there are tools like the XLN Audio XO, a software package that's been developed and tuned to ensure that beat making feels like child's play. Just like many sequence-style packages, an x0x-style step time editor forms the core of the XO, but this is where any similarities end, since when faced with the swarm-interface, you might be left wondering why you're staring blankly at a screen full of dots - but you give it a minute or two, the rewards are astounding.
Ok, so they may not amount to a billion, but each one of those little dots stands for a sound, and the closer one dot is to another, the more similar they are in terms of sound. If a specific sound isn't exactly what you had in mind, then there's a big chance that you'll find a better fit in a nearby dot. The way you can move your mouse across the dots is seductive in itself - no trawling through exhaustive and complex menus - instead, you're simply invited to explore. Naturally, once you have your sounds selected, you have the power to tweak and add effects, and you can also add your own sounds then XO will analyse them and place them in the swarm in close orbit to similar sounding dots. This genuinely unique and intuitive revelation of a production tool brings beat-making back where it should be - pure and shameless joy!
