The Austrian Audio OC818 Live Pack offers two OC818 large-diaphragm condenser microphones. The signal from the diaphragms can be sent individually so that the directional characteristic can be later adjusted from the comfort of your desk. Open up both faders for an omnidirectional pattern; reverse the polarity of one of the mics and you have a figure-of-8 pattern; by lowering one of the two faders, you get a number of a uni-directional patterns like hypercardioid and supercardioid. Using the OCR8 remote control (not included), this can even be done from a smartphone or tablet as you wander around the venue to check the effect front-of-house.

De regelbare karakteristiek, met een schakelaar op de microfoon zelf, is erg handig om snel te kunnen zien in welke stand de microfoon staat. Bij het omschakelen trouwens geen hinderlijke schakelplof te horen. Daarnaast ook een uitgebreide set hoogdoorlaatfilters en een voorverzwakker van -10 dB en -20 dB.
De microfoon klinkt warm in het laag, een beetje geaccentueerd in het midden, en heeft een helder maar zeker niet agressief hoog. (In de stand bi-directioneel klinkt de microfoon iets scherper, zoals te verwachten bij deze C414-opvolger.)
Erg leuk is dat de beide membranen apart opgenomen kunnen worden, d.m.v. een mini-XLR op de rug van de microfoon. (Kabeltje daarvoor is meegeleverd.) Dat geeft een hoop mogelijkheden. Zoals de microfoonkarakteristiek na opname nog steeds kunnen aanpassen, of zelfs deze aanpassen per frequentieband, m.b.v. gratis downloadbare software op de website van Austrian Audio.
Ook andere opties als surroundopnames worden mogelijk. Formaten als dubbel-MS of Ambisonics (WXY) zijn makkelijk af te leiden met twee OC818 microfoons.
De microfoonkarakteristiek op afstand regelen kan ook, middels een optionele Bluetooth-antenne, die op de achterkant van de microfoon kan ingeplugd. Je kan dan vanop je smartphone via een gratis downloadbare app. op afstand de karakteristiek van de microfoon bijsturen.
De set bevat twee OC818 microfoons, twee klemmen, twee windkappen en twee zwarte, stoffen beschermhoesjes.
Waar het misschien beter kon: de studio-set zit opgeborgen in een kartonnen doos. Daar was een stevigere opbergdoos uit houd of kunststof beter geweest.
Maar zeker een geslaagde microfoon met een berg mogelijkheden, voor een aanvaardbare prijs.
