AKG C314 multi-pattern condenser microphone

General

The AKG C314 is a so-called multi-pattern condenser microphone, which means that you have a choice from a range of pickup patterns - omnidirectional (picks up audio from all directions), cardioid (mainly picks up sound from the front), hyper-cardioid (highly directional) and figure-8 (picks up audio from the sides of the mic). These pickup patterns make the C314 highly versatile, while its computer-matched diaphragms ensure accuracy. Furthermore, you may count on a low self-noise level of 8 dB, and an extensive dynamic range, so variations in volume lwon't pose any problems. An integrated shock mount, 20dB pad switch and bass-cut filter are also provided.

C314: pickup patterns

We advise you use the popular cardioid pickup pattern if the sound source is directly in front of the mic and ambient noise needs to be shut out of the recording. The proximity effect is reduced with the bass-cut filter. For an extra-directional recording of the sound source with increased elimination of ambient noise, you select the hyper-cardioid pattern. The omnidirectional pattern picks up sound from all directions, and is therefore ideal if a group of vocalists or a drum kit's audio need to be recorded. Figure-8 is often used for stereo recordings - in that case you should position two figure-8 mics close together, or do the same with a figure-8 and an omnidirectional microphone.
